Are we still teaching our children to prerserve our filipino traditional games? |
| |
| I really miss those patentero, bunong braso, and lots of filipino traditonal games when I was a small kid. I seldom see those games anymore nowadays which being played by our children and younger relatives. Those traditional games of ours are already forgotten due to computer games flooded every where on our different places. Did you not miss those games? Have you encourage still your children to play those rather than this expensive computer games nowadays? | | | | | |

| | Yes, I think the games in the past are lot better than today and promotes exercise too for the body. with computer games, children just get addicted and it is also needing money if they are either renting PC and services, or paying for electricity. The games that children used to play in the past requires no money. I was a child in the 80s, and 90s and we used to play hide and seek, patintero, piko, bahay-bahayan and tinda-tindahan, sungka, paper dolls, etc. We don't even buy anything or have anything ready, we devise and make it ourselves and that is making you creative too. For the boys, there are more options, and games are diverse too, so you won't get bored. But the playground is wider and more available then than now. I remember playing in the fields that ends in another town, we can even go fishing. I don't think that children that grew up with modern, robotic toys will appreciate playing those old games, you can encourage them, children naturally loves to play. But it helps if you don't surround them with modern toys. Sometimes having too little of something has its advantages too. | | | | | | |

| | Agree with JDy116. I saw a feature from Jessica Soho's program showing kids from the province playing the traditional games. It's really saddening to think that physical games aren't that much focused on by the youth nowadays because of the coming of the computer age. It's not really healthy to be in front of the monitor for more than 5 hours straight (believe me, there are people who do this) then continue watching TV/DVDs afterwards. | | | |

| | Why do we need this? anyway, my nephews are still playing patintero and all the games. who taught them? none. they are kids. let them be. whatever they are playing is a result of what they see and what they experience. they are never forgotten. and it's not like your going to play video games 8 hours a day right? if you don't see children playing, its because they out there working. | | | | | | |

| | My 8 year old nephew knew how to play some of the traditonal games but seldom plays it because we don't space for patintero at home but whenever we go to the beach we play patintero and other games. But he plays marbles with his schoolmate after school. I have observed the children in his school it's a private one, the children while waiting for their parents or nannies are playing Filipino games. It's also part of the intramurals in the school. But we can't really discourage them not to play with computer games. As long as there is a balance in their playing then it's okay. | | | | | | |

| | I think that there are still kids that play traditional filipino games. I also think that in school they still introduce these games. I also think that games evolve and sometimes change into something new that kids themselves create and would think of it as their own game when they grow old and would miss it because a new game has been introduced which by then they would know absolutely nothing about. | | | | | | |

| | Ye sister. You're right. You just came late in replying this topic, I could mark your response as the best if you just came in earlier. But anyway, I appreciate what you had contributed in your school. I hope our own traditional games would never be gone...cheers | | | |
