Playing movies on my laptop |

| My son burned a data DVD disc with AVI format movies and it's not playing on my laptop. He used Nero burning ROM. He has Windows XP and I have Windows Vista. What do I need to play these movies? DCMerkle | | | | | |

| | try downloading VLC Media Player. It's available on download.com and its free. it could be that your system does not support the needed codec for that file. if you have a divx program already installed try playing it there first. your avi file, may it be burned on disc or not, should have no problem playing if you have the proper codec. if this avi file is downloaded through torrent, beware for it can be a virus. yes, a 700mb big virus. not kidding here | | | | | | |

| | Michael, I did try to download VLC. I had installed it and it still didn't play the disc. What it did do, as I was playing around with the controls, was activate my web cam. That I wasn't ready for. I scared myself!..lol My son does use Torrent and that answered his question on where he had gotten the virus that he suspected that his PC has. Where would I find my divx program? Maybe that will work? DCMerkle | | | |

| | sunmano, What video programs are supported by Vista? Where would I go for Kmplayer? VLC did seem to be easy to use, but I uninstalled it when it activated my web cam. DCMerkle | | | |

| | kijiky, I'll have to check that out. It sounds as if I won't have to download a program that has to be installed? I'm in and out of the hospital from time to time as well and the next time I go I plan to take my laptop this time, for the first time. What do you do with your laptop if you have to leave your room for tests or something? DCMerkle | | | |

| | Are you kidding I don't trust anybody with my babay. It my Dell I have 120GIG Harddrive. My Dell came with a wonderful heavy duty suitcase. I take it everwhere with me in the hospital. They got to know me that well. They understood also. Alot of people do it now. When you get there don't tell them at first. If you don't have your own wireless card from like At&t to get out you will have to use the telephone line. So you are gonna have to know who your dialup provide number is. But if you are just play movies you don't need all that. I did everything. I pluged into the net and ketp up with things, I don'tremember why I didn't start with mylot back then. I was signed up, but I just never did it till now. Hope that helps. They do have a program you download so you can get the movies. You can rent at 3.99 for the day. Sometimes they are 1.99. Or you can buy them for 9.99 or new oe for 19.99 and up I bought mine at 9.99 after they weren't. | | | |

| | kijiky, My laptop is wireless, so I don't need a card. In fact, I am connected to my county's unsecured network. I'm in a hot spot and 12 floors up. I have a good signal except when it's foggy out. I guess that the signal just bounces because of the density of the atmosphere. I looked into MovieLink and saw that it is a BlockBuster thing. I have Netflix and they offer the same thing, but I have to download their player to my OS. They don't charge for the movies. I think it's because I already have an account with them for movies in the mail. Maybe I should use the player from Netflix and just muddle through the configuration part. Not that I'm planning to go into the hospital anytime soon, but I should have everything operating right if I find myself there. The Dr's and Nurses don't say anything when you hook up to the phone? The hospitals in my area have the phones that are just a receiver that you lay flat on the table. It's like a cordless with the cord. I don't have a laptop carrier with mine. I opted to not get it and I know that was dumb. I must have something here that has a zipper that I could use. Now, I'm going to have to go on a hunt to find something that I can use...lol DCMerkle | | | |

| | A kids back pack works good and then wrap it good in a thick bath towel. Bring a 25 foot telephone cord they cost about five bucks. | | | |

| | if you want to start them in your Windows media player, get a pack of codec's like K-lite mega codec pack. This would support not only avi but many other formats. However, if you are only concerned with running the avi, then short & sweet install vlc player available free and easily. just google it & get the link. | | | | | | |

| | cyrus_p, I do have windows media player and that's why I thought that my son's discs would play on my laptop. I can play discs that I get from Netflix with no problem. How would I get what you suggested? Is it free or do I go out and purchase it? DCMerkle | | | |

| | If it's in AVI format one of these programs should be able to play it: 1) Real One Player 2) Windows Media Player 3) UltraPlayer 4) VideoLAN / VLC Player 5) Divx player Or if none of these works you may have to update your codex first. Cole2K Media Codex is very helpful for me. You can try that first before downloading any more programs: http://www.cole2k.net/ Just click to the right & download their standard codex. I believe all the above is avaliable on download.com as well. Cheers! Pablo | | | | | | |
