Finally, running water on our road! |
|
We are finally getting running water on our road after 8 long years of living here. When we first moved in we had a cistern and it went dry a lot. The rest of the people on this road had wells and they also went dry a lot. Also in the winter our pipes froze often and we had to carry water.
Recently, we had to start carrying water for good because my husband found a dead squirrel in the cistern and we had to quit using the water from it. We have a big heavy lid over the cistern but somehow the squirrel still got in and it was just too gross to even think of using it anymore. The rest of the people on this road decided to start a petition a couple of years ago to get a grant for running water on our road. Their reasons were because there was too much sulfur in their wells and they had to end up going to friends and families to take showers almost every night.
We have been carrying water for way too long. We have to fill 2 five gallon jugs up from a pipe running off of the hill and carry it down to our house. It isn't that far but it is still hard. Then we have to heat the water up for our baths and washing dishes and other cleaning that needs done. It really sucks, especially since it is really cold out and we have to carry the water down to the house in the cold.
Yeah, it kind of makes us feel like the Walton's but we will never move because we love it here too much. So after two long years of waiting on the petition to be signed and the grants to be approved, the water is being put in either tomorrow or Monday. Most everyone else on our road already have their running water but we had to wait longer because they have to go through the creek to run the lines to the house. We were starting to think they had forgotten about us and my husband has been calling the water department and they keep telling us the same thing: You will get your lines hooked up, it is just taking a little longer than usual. Yeah well, hurry up already so we can start taking showers again instead of sponge baths and so I can do the dishes with hot running water instead of waiting for it to heat up on the stove.
Today, we got a nice surprise when I went outside to bring my puppy in. The water department was out there and one of the guys was standing on our bridge. He came over to me and asked if our bridge was sturdy enough to bring their equipment over. I told him that we brought our 7 ton trailer across it with no problem and the electric company brought their heavy equipment across it before. I asked him when they were going to have it hooked up and he said either Friday, tomorrow, or Monday! You cannot imagine how happy I was. At first I didn't believe him because they have been saying for weeks that ours was next on the list and it seemed we kept getting skipped. But my husband went outside to talk to them and they were setting up the water meter and the equipment they needed to measure how far down the creek they would have to dig. So Yes! We are finally going to have running water with lots and lots of pressure! Now I can take my showers at home instead of going to my moms to take them. Now we need to get a washer and dryer!
Have you ever had to live without running water for a long period of time? If so, why? How did it make you feel?
I can't wait!:)

1. MonkOVision (936) | 1 year ago | I can't even begin to imagine how excited you and your family must be to be getting water. You have really been through a lot!
I have only been without water for short terms of a couple of days when we've had trouble with the well and that was bad enough.
I don't think that people realize how much of a problem fresh water supplies are to so much of the world.
I look forward to hearing that you all are enjoying hot showers!

cwilson26 (1632) | 1 year ago | Yeah, it will really feel nice to have running water again after so long without it. I told my husband that I won't know what to do once we get it, lol. Of course the first thing I am doing is taking a nice hot shower. The only time I get nice showers is when I go to my moms and I take advantage of hers. It is going to feel like Heaven.
Yeah, I agree. A lot of people don't understand the need for fresh water. A lot of people also take advantage of it and don't realize how good they have it when others don't have it so good. Believe me, when our water is turned on and once I get my nice hot shower, I will happily respond here!:)

2. panzerswifey (289) | 1 year ago | I moved to Detroit with my ex he told me where we were supposed to live was beautiful. But it was not and the water was not on and cost so much it qwas impossible to get back on. It was horrible 1st the neighbor allowed my ex to get water then he got mad and said no so when we would wash clothes at the laundry mat washing we would fill up gallons and gallons & while was folding and doing the laundry he was walkin the water home. It was horrible in the winter boiling water to bathe children. Needless 2 say my ex-father in law helped us month after I was suckered into moving. having to fetch water for cooking, bathing and cleaning is a very hard thing.
It was embarassing and stressful, When we moved in a house that had running water the first thing I did befor unpacking was take a hot bath. It is the best thing in the world to have running water.

cwilson26 (1632) | 1 year ago | Not having running water is hard enough for us adults but for kids it is worse. Luckily, we don't have kids right now but if we did while this non water thing was going on, I would have moved somewhere else in a heartbeat where there was running water, just for my kids.
Yes, it is very stressful to have to carry water every day. My back hurts every day because of all of the water I have to carry. It sucks and you are definitely right about it being worse in the winter.
The first thing I am going to do as soon as our water is hooked up is have a nice hot shower. Yeah, running water is the best thing in the world and we often don't know what we have until we have lost it.:)

cwilson26 (1632) | 1 year ago | Oh you don't know how hard it is to have to carry water everyday, heat it up, do the dishes, heat up more, take a bath, heat up more, clean the rest of the house. It is hard and stressful and hell on my back. My husband helps carry it but sometimes I find myself carrying it by myself and I have gotten used to it. Thank God, we won't have to do it anymore after tonight or this weekend. They said either Friday or Monday and I am hoping it is Friday when they get it done. I cannot wait to take a hot shower and wash dishes like I used to with hot running water. I swear I want to get rid of those 5 gallon jugs but I think i should save them because you never know when you need them again.:)

4. Katlady2 (4468) | 1 year ago | That is awesome news! Good for you hon! I had to deal with that same kind of thing but it was because the stupid idiot that I was living with refused to pay the bill. He was 'mental' so there was no reasoning with the guy. I had to go to his mom's to get water for anything. I hated it!

cwilson26 (1632) | 1 year ago | Thank you! Yes I cannot wait. I am taking a hot shower as soon as it is on! Our water bill will go on our semi yearly taxes so it won't cost much for us thank goodness. I would gladly go broke if I had to though to keep my running water. Nothing will take running water away from me again and I will not take advantage of it ever again because I do not want to lose it again.:)

They did have elcetric So we could run the washer when needed but took alot of trios to fillit up!. My brother - in - law had no lights till we built a house close to his and got electric in ours then a couple of years later he got lights put in . Then they sold the place and moved to town lol

cwilson26 (1632) | 1 year ago | Yes we do have a hot water heater and my husband used to be a plumber so we have all of the pipes we need. He actually taught me a while back how to put water pipes in in case he gets hurt and can't do it. We are all prepared but I guess they are going to wait until Monday since they didn't show up today. Probably waiting until the snow storm hits us and leaves. We are expecting a foot of snow or more and it has already started. It is really coming down out there.
Yeah it sucks having to live like this but now, after this weekend we won't have to anymore. I hardly complained while we have been going through this because I got used to it and knew that someday soon things would change for the better, and they have! I can't wait.:)

Yep, my husband has taught me a lot. He has deteriorated disks in his back and there are some things he can't do like he used to so he taught me in case he can't do something. But if he can do it, he will and he says he is putting the pipes in. I am going to help of course.:)

7. jzbrynn (1413) | 1 year ago | That is horrible, where are we now? Do we living at a third world country? We should modernize our utility somehow. Yeah, that is right, our tax money should used to benefit our community, not for the war in another country for nothing. We should make it clear to all these government agencies.
| |
| |
|
|
cwilson26 (1632) | 1 year ago | Yeah I agree. It should be required for everyone to have fresh running water no matter where they live. I live in the United States but I also live out in the country. That doesn't mean that we shouldn't have fresh running water just like the people in cities and towns. It shouldn't have taken the people on our road to have to complain and have everyone sign a petition in order for us to have running water. Thankfully, we are finally getting it.:)

8. eeyore39 (3181) | 1 year ago | Well congratulations. Persistence does pay off doesn't it. Although you may want it back the way it was when you start getting those water bills on a regular basis. I have lived in an area where we had to carry water to the house. Fortunately it was not for a long period of time but I guess those are the fotunes you must endure when you want to live in the back 40. Good Luck with the new water system. You will wonder how you have survived all this time.

|
cwilson26 (1632) | 1 year ago | Oh we don't have to worry too much about our water bill because they are going to put it on our property taxes. It doesn't matter, having running water will be worth the extra bill we will have to pay. Carrying water is very stressful and tiring. Especially with my husband having deteriorated disks in his back and I have to do most of the carrying. I just can't wait until they put it in and we have our running water for good.:)
