how risky is preparing and eating "fugu"?

hi all! japanese foods are all the rage right now, especially sushi. however, i've heard of this food which may cause poisoning if not prepared correctly. it's called "fugu" or puffer fish (if i recall it correctly). how can fugu cause poisoning? how should one prepare it (if not a professional) for safe consumption? and how large is the risk of poisoning from preparing and eating fugu? thanks in advance!
