While I was channel surfing last weekend, I saw the weighing in of the show "The Biggest Loser". In this weigh in, the contestants have to weigh in an see how many pounds they lost after a week of none-stop workout. As I was watching, I can't help but be amazed that some of them are able to loose 13 or even 20+ pounds in one week. I know they have the help of trainors but still it's a feat in itself. I mean, I have been working out and all but I haven't lost more than about 3 or 4 punds in a MONTH! Wel, I am not sure if this is even true but I want to give them the benefit of my doubt.

The thing is, apparently a lot of the weight they're losing is water weight. And it's also very important that they start off very heavy - not only does this mean that it's easier to create a larger calorie deficit, but there's just a lot more water stored that can be lost. And generally the bigger numbers come from guys, who lose weight and build muscle more easily than women.

Also, bear in mind that they're exercising for hours (and I mean HOURS) a day. They're training like athletes, and spending the rest of their time in the kitchen preparing very specific balanced foods. They are not living in real life.

In real life, losing 3-4 pounds in a month is very good progress! 1-2 pounds a week is generally what is recommended as safe weight loss, and is also on track for the amount of fat the body can happily burn. It's my biggest issue with Biggest Loser actually. The message of never giving up and being dedicated is very good, but unfortunately there's also the idea that you should be able to get quick results. When it's not really the speed of losing weight that's important, it's whether you can keep it off.

And many of the challengers regain weight after they're on the show. As they rehydrate, and as they fall into a more achievable schedule for life outside the show.

Wow, very informative. Thank you. I don't really want to push myself too much but I want to loose those unwanted weight so much. With what you wrote, I would definitely make sure that I do it- losing weight, properly. Thanks again.

Yup, slower is better ;] Well, too slow is frustrating, but no matter the speed, you'll be able to look back and remember what it felt like being pounds heavier...

Do you use Sparkpeople, or one of the similar sites? I find them fantastic for weight loss, because you can use them whatever way helps you best, and Sparkpeople in particular has tons of information and a knowledgeable community, which I love. Because I tend to freak out when I'm not sure what I'm doing is a really good idea or if I'm potentially harming myself.

I agree with the poster that people shouldn't lose to much weight in one week. Its important to lose weight properly to keep the weight off for the rest of your life. Recently, I learned that one of the winners has gained some of the weight back and I can see that would be easy to have happen.

I know that either trainer on The Biggest Loser would be able to help me get the weight off. The real issue is for how long would I keep every pound off? One of the biggest problems for me is the smell of fresh baked bread can quickly get me into the kitchen making my own bread.

The show does bring awareness that some Americans really need help losing weight and they are going to die without help losing weight. Its clear that people need to make lifestyle changes by eating differently and getting more exercise.

The real issue really is KEEPING THOSE POUNDS OFF. I guess, for mst of us it is easier to get it off. A few days of crash diet would do the trick. However, if we don't change our lifestyle in general then those pounds would be back again with some other pounds making their way in to our body too. So in the end, our crash diet backfires. I agree that it has to be a lifestyle change to maintain a healthy body.
