This week at "The Rest Of The Story" we took a look at homelessness in America and the impact of the foreclosure and layoff crisis.

Homelessness is not always what we may think, it is not the drunken panhandler down on the corner.

In a telephone interview with Adam Gaeddert from the National Coalition for The Homeless and Brian Wilson from the Homeless Ministry Connection we discussed the current situation.

Adam informed me that recently at the Conference Of Mayors they polled 25 major cities to determine if foreclosure is in fact causing an increase in homelessness, the overall answer was a definitive "Yes"!

The fastest growing population among the homeless are families, mostly single mothers with an average of 2 kids. As many as 1.25 million children are believed to be homeless in America. Single mothers and their children also represent the largest population of Americans living below the poverty line.

You may think you are safe from foreclosure if you rent your home, however this is not always true. Some of the hardest hit families did not own their home, they rented. They paid their rent on time and never new that their landlord was not paying his mortgage. In many cases they had little or no notice of the pending foreclosure and there were no laws in place to protect them.

yea that is true my friend who is renting said just yesterday that even their landlord is having money probs :( but then again most people think of the homeless as in ppl who are in shelters and on the streets . What anout the people living with family because they lost their house , personally I cant put all the blame on the banks cause they didnt put a gun to peoples head to have them buy a house they knew good and well they could not afford , to me if i knew that i bought a house for over 100k i would be a nervouse wreck ( wich would probly explain my brothern laws attitude these days ) but I would literally wake up every morning and winder how on earth i will pay for it , right now we are in 10k debt and today is my husbands last dat at the steel mill since they are putting steel on hold since nobody is buying , and even knowing that with unemployment the main bills will be paid im still freaking out ! im sure he will be called back once things pick up but personally this ression stuff they are telling us n the new is bull! we have hit a depression and nobody wants to admit it :( so much so that even me who has always refused to have a gun in the ouse (yes i think im the only 1 in tx that dont own a gun LOL) im seriously thinking of getting one since i rescue rabbits and also raise chickens for the eggs but all my neibors see in my ard is dinner. So im wondering if I should get one since we will have a garden like we always do and that could even be raided too. But i have 4 kids and babysit I know the safet things like lock the bullets in the safe and such but doin that there would be no time so sould i just let them deal with a really mad blonde annd a metal bat? ( personally i prefer the bat it would be more satisfying to beat the crap out of my crappy neibors if they try to steal a rabbit or chicken . cause like i said teh rabbits are a no kill rescuse and the chickens are for eggs and garne for us that being said you steal from me your stealing from the mouths of my kids ... and you really dont want to do that , I think any parent would see red if somone did that

Under some Federal guidelines those who are living with friends or family despite the fact that they have no real home are not considered homeless, in other words according to these agencies they do not qualify for any assistance.

I recently watched an interview with a financial expert who said that he had in fact made the same mortgage mistake as every one else, the only thing he did differently was realized his mistake in time to fix it. He said they made it sound great at first and were very convincing. Most peoples problem wasn't the mortgage itself but the sudden and dramatic increase in their monthly payment.

Thanks for the comment
