We have some beautiful flowers in our yard but I don't see a lot of butterflies so I would imagine I am growing the wrong flowers to attract buttlerflies. What flowers do you grow that attract butterflies?

o o o try a fire bush, they spread out up to 4-5 foot and 3-4 ft.high and you'll have butterfly's galore. now, i live in florida so i don't know about other states and the freezing point, but they have thick stalks with bark unlike the annuals. problem #1 issss, after the butterfly's lay their egg's on the bush's you have to keep an eye for caterpillars eating the bush the 1st year. after you plant 1 they have to be watered every day for 2 weeks to get a good root system, then you have it made.their drought resistant. great blooms.check the web for a bulb co. they have all sort's and the catalog will direct you where and when to plant. also if you fish keep the scraps put them in a 3 lb. coffee can and water the plants thru the can burried inbetween the plants, just burry the can or container up to the top,pop open the lid and water, coffee grounds are also great for the root system.or buy a bag of cow manure and put that in the can.

Hey Max, thanks. I have seen what I think are fire bushes on my walks around town and love them. I will have to get me one or two for our backyard garden. I have Vesey's seed catalog on order so they may have them. If not I will check our local nursery.

sweet alyssum, four o'clocks, moss rose, purple cone flower, wildflower mix, butterfly weed, lavender hyssop, lupine, red milkweed, morning glory are also plants to consider and you should have some shallow water worked in for the butterflies...even if it just a small water fountain. http://gardeningtoybox.bloghi.com

http://gardeningtoybox.bloghi.com/ Butterflies are basically attracted to most plants that attract bees and hummingbirds. They seem to prefer lower growing plants though and lay their eggs on butterfly weed, butterfly bush and milkweed so if you plant any of these three plants you will attract butterflies to your yard.

I put in a butterfly/hummingbird garden last yr which did attract a few but with the garden being so new, not as many as I would have liked...this yr however there should be more which will be nice.....Plant things like butterfly bush Daylilies coneflowers Columbine Bee balm daisies If you look online you should be able to easily find a list of the prefered flowers for a garden of that type...

Sorry to say this that I don't have any idea regarding flowers that can attract more butterflies. Why not make an experiment? Put variety of flowers and see which one is really effective. I love butterflies but it is now rare here in our place.
