Homemade cleaners

I hate the smell of commercial carpet cleaners. They are all sweet smelling and kind of make me nauseous. I am looking for a good, homemade carpet cleaner I can put in a spray bottle that will get out, among other things, pet stains. I don't care if it smells as long as it doesn't smell like syrup (or ammonia because A. ammonia is kind of what I am trying to get rid of and B. ammonia makes me even more nauseous than the flowery cleaners).

I can not stand the smell of ammonia either. I simply can not use it. Avoid making an awful stain more annoying by dping a color fast test, in an out of sight area first, before applying any solution, to be sure your carpet is safe for the cleaner. There are several solutions, that can be made at home that are designed to remove even stubborn stains. NOTE: Do not use home cleaning products that contain lanolin or bleach As Soon As You Find The Stain: Mix of 1 cup Vinegar, 1 Cup Water and 1/2 cup of baking soda. apply and with a towel, blot gently. Rinse with cloth or paper towel, dampened with clean water and blot dry. Repeat until stain is gone. Always allow the solution to remain on the caret for a few minutes before blotting. Never Rub a stain from side to side. Always blot instead. Using a section of the cloth or towel to take up the stain. Rotate spots in your cloth or towels. Optional Alternative: For a Pet Stain, first blot up any residuals left behind. Then using a solution of 1:1 vinegar and water. Apply to the pet stain. Blot gently. Blotting up what you can. Do not blot dry. Sprinkle generously, baking soda onto the spot and leave until completely dry. Approximately three to four hours. Then vacuum the area. If The Stain is Already Set: With caution, prepare a mixture of 1/2 cup of white vinegar and 1/2 cup of water. Apply with a towel. Blot the stain with the towel. Blot well and leave to dry. Once dry, sprinkle baking soda onto the stain and pour a mixture of 1/4 cup hydrogen peroxide and 1/4 cup of dish soap onto the stained area. Test on an inconspicuous area first to be sure that the hydrogen peroxide doesn't change the color of your carpet. Blot gently and thoroughly, into the stain, using a cloth. Just blot and leave to dry before vacuuming. Repeat as required. Additionally, 1/2 cup of each Borax, Salt and Vinegar. Apply mixture to the stain generously using a cloth. Blot gently. Leave for a few hours to dry, then vacuum. Hope this helps.

Thanks! These are great suggestions. I was thinking baking soda and vinegar, but wasn't sure the proportions.

I have been looking around for this very thing. I can not use commercial carpet cleaners without getting a headache. Thanks for starting this discussion. Thumbs up, EvrWonder.

I'm not sure about a spray bottle type. Baking soda works really good on carpet. I sprinkle it on, leave it for awhile, then vacuum. Gets a lot of odors out. Vinegar is supposed to do the same, but I can't stand the smell of vinegar.
