Audition songs

If you were a singer and American Idol came to your city (or somewhere close enough to travel) would you audition? Which song would you pick? A girl on Tuesday night's show came prepared with two songs, Umbrella and Bubbly, and let the judges pick which one they wanted to hear (thank the gods they picked Bubbly cause I can't stand Umbrella....it makes me want to cause Rhianna severe bodily harm). I have given this a lot of thought and I kind of think I would want to do something that they don't hear seven hundred times a day... Some of my choices are a little obscure but being in the music industry I would hope they would be familiar with a broad selection and not just the Billboard Hot 100. I have thought of Deep Red Bells by Neko Case, the Charlie Chaplin standard Smile (which I used to sing all the time when I was a little kid), A Case of You by Joni Mitchell, This Time Imperfect by AFI (no, really, it is a terrific vocal melody with a lot of highs and lows, and I can easily jump it up an octave to fit my range). What about you? Given it any thought?

I would probably sing Hallelujah by James Buckley or a male version of Regina Spektor's Samson (although I don't think you can ever make a male version of that song) ^_^ I felt bad for the kid who sang Third Eye Blind's Jumper. He had a passable voice but they still didn't make him go through. I also felt sorry for the senior school president because he sang two songs that the judges had no idea of.

Simon really likes Hallelujah, if I remember from when Jason Castro sang it last season... I think the kid who sang Jumper could have been really good with some more confidence. Last year they let a couple of people bring in guitars and keyboards and play them, I wonder why they wouldn't let him. He was totally out of his zone without it.

To put it plain and simple tt's because it's a vocal competition, not an audition to play in the background band. If your voice isn't enough to carry you through that particular part in front of the judges than you shouldn't be there. But as far as I'm concerned, if that latin girl (who is nuts I sat behind her round two and I was convinced she was one of the bad people) made it through, then why didn't he? She was not very good at all.

I sang Lindsey Haun 'Broken' both times I auditioned. You should have about five songs prepared. The second time I auditioned I made it through the first round and before they gave me the gold ticket they had me sing 2 other songs. I did 'Don't Play That Song'- Aretha Franklin and 'Independence Day' - Martina McBride. It was enough to get me through. But my 'story' wasn't enough to get me on the show. LAME. Whatever, I'm doing again. Third times the charm, right?

Thankfully I'm not del;usional enough to consider even trying out! But if I DID have the skills needed to have a good chance auditioning, I'd sing "Love rears its ugly head" by Living Color. It's not an overly well known song, but it is a difficult one to sing and needs a wide octave range to do it justice. It would be a good choice in my opinion for someone to prove they have the talent needed.

Perhaps, I would try Reflections singing the refrain part and Somewhere Over the Rainbow. I just love those songs and am sure I could belt them in the proper tone and pitch. hehehe...I hope so.

Not really. Cause if they expected me to sing, not only would the judges boo me off the stage, there would be a riot. The entire audience would be fighting to be the first to stake me! I'll just keep singing, all by myself, with no one around to hear me. I'll be much safer that way! I'm so glad you can sing. It is a gift to be treasured.

I think I will sing "Nothing Compares To You" by Sinead O'Connor because I love that song. I don't think Simon will be bored by it since it is not really a ballad though it is a love song. Or I could sing a Vanessa Carlton or a Michelle Branch song cause it will suit my voice.
