I just marvel at how civic minded people are nowadays and I am just appalled with this article on how an 83-year-old war veteran who tackled a gunman during a robbery at a bookmakers while other customers stood by.
Sidney Bannister, who served with the Royal Artillery Corps during World War II, put 30-year-old robber Henry Rockson in a headlock.
But the pensioner's calls for assistance met a wall of silence and up to nine other men in the shop - most far younger than Mr Bannister - stood by as Rockson smashed him twice in the head with the butt of the gun.
The robber escaped with at least £250 and later carried out a further string of armed raids.
Mr Bannister, a retired HGV driver, needed stitches for a head wound.
The article further states the widower, of Lees near Oldham, Greater Manchester, said: 'There were nine other blokes in the shop and most of them were either half my age or younger. I just wish one of them had shown some gumption.
'I was shouting at the them to give me a lift and I had the guy but they just weren't interested in helping. I was very surprised by their reaction.
'We might have got the bugger there and then. Instead he got away.'
Just where is the much needed public spiritedness here? Shame on the 9 blokes who just simply stood and watch without even helping this elderly citizen? So, much for their years of upbringing and education, it is really a shame that such people could be living and existing today.
Unbelievable.

Things like this happen all to often these days. Everyone cries about crime and the injustices of the world but are not willing to stand up for it when the need arises. Those willing to take action, like Mr. Bannister are few and far between. He appears to be the one voice of courage amid a crowd of cowards.

syeryn,
Well said, and it is just sad that the world is lacking characters like Mr. Bannister here.
Good point here and take care.
