Old buildings are more beautiful than new ones..

Old architecture - Old architecture - old concrete wall.

Do you agree to this statement? I have noticed so many beautiful old building, castles, churches, even living apartments build in last centuries stand out against an architectural background. Why is that earlier people cared of beauty around themselves more than we do now? Personally, I don't find beauty in 21st century architecture. I see modernism and boxed shaped living spaces.

It's sad to see so few people around here participate in such discussions. But thank you for starting this. It's a very debated subject in many countries. All I can say is this : unfortunately much more of the old buildings have personality. In a quest for innovation, modern architecture denies some basic human needs and comforts. For example, the house of glass in "The Lake House" would feel terrible to live in for me. I'd feel like a fish in a fish tank, but the idea in itself is interesting as an experiment. I think modern architecture's excentricity is in a way well suited for a society in which every person tries to be as different as possible. It's a statement of the people for the people. But as beauty in its true form, meaning sizes, proportions and shapes, it's inferior many times to the old architecture, much closer to human dimensions and perception of beauty. What I find interesting in modern architecture and I like very much is the use of curves, fractal design and the light. Because of the technical posibilities today, we can use light in ways we have never done it before and it's a way to make modern architecture beautiful. Also, the inovative ideas like green walls, green roofs or eco-houses built in-land can make great starting points for an architecture of higer quality than that of the past 2 milenia .

I agree 100%... we will go downtown during the summer for some of the festivals, and not that I would put down some of the newer buildings, they do try to modernize them... but they do not compare to the building architechure of 100 yrs ago or so... There are old churches and office building that are closed up, or not in great shape anymore, but you can still see the beauty and the heart that went into them. great discussion!!
