AVG free edition

Does this protect against adware? that's all I have for anti-virus. I've heard this is all you need. But it seems I've got some adware.

AVG free editiion doesn't protect against adware. there are many softwares for removing adware.

No it can't, AVG free edition protects us from Virus only it can't do anything with Adware. I think i am lucky i am not a victim of Adware till now can anyone tell what is adware and how will it effect us.
