The Hobbit, new movie  | |  I've been following the upcoming Hobbit movie as its been discussed back and forth. Conflict between Peter Jackson and the studio. I'm glad they have finally begun production. I'm not sure splitting into 2 movies is a good idea, but I'm willing to admit i'm wrong if it works.
I have just finished reading a great article about it in this months Empire magazine. Peter Jackson doing the producing and writing, with Guillermo del Toro directing is making me excited to see what they will produce. I thought Pan's Labyrinth was excellent. There was a lot of speculation as to who would be cast in it, though it was only speculation.
I wonder what everyone thinks about the choice of 2 movies to tell the story, who they think they should cast in it.

| | | | | | | | 1.  uath13 (3755) | 11 months ago |  It was a rather long book. If they put everything Tolkien put into it then a single movie would be way too long for anyone to sit through in the theaters. 2 movies isn't a bad idea so long as they do as good a job as they did on the LOTR trilogy.

Where would one end and the next one begin? With the first 3 movies they were actually individual books so they had a definite ending and beginning. I hope they don't split it into two just to make more money.

| cd_lear (52) | 11 months ago | Aside from Gandalf, and Gollum, there won't be many of the Lord of the Rings characters in the Hobbit. Yes Bilbo is in it, but it supposed to be Bilbo at the same age Frodo was at the start of LOTR.
I complete agree though that Sir Ian Mckellan and Andy Serkis should play Gandalf and Gollum. | |

This is what they are going to do:
The first part, due out in 2011, will basically be The Hobbit.
The second part, due out in 2012, will be beyond what the book of The Hobbit has to tell, it'll be additional material to bridge what happens in between The Hobbit and LOTR, which hasn't been written of. All we know from the books is Bilbo gets the ring, kills Smaug. In LOTR, we put up the story many years later. I think the second part is a good idea.
I read this at scifi.com sometime in past two weeks or so.

| TomAustin (15) | 3 months ago |  I had heard that the second movie would be the eighty or so years between the books, and this is what's getting me just a little worried about how it's going to turn out. I'm not sure Guillermo de Toro is going to keep to the canon that Tolkien set up, especially since I still think Peter Jackson should have let certain details alone (*cough* Arwen*cough*).
There really isn't that much information about the time gap, so they are going to have to make up a lot of information about it for the story. I heard that it could involve The Story of Arwen and Aragorn, from the appendices, which would make sense to me, since that's when it happened.
I am looking forward to the battle with the spiders. That's just going to be fantastic. At any rate, it's got to be better than Bakshi.

Maybe they decide this to buy "twice" in tickets and that's not right to make this things just for the economics reasons.
