Is your skin very dry during the winter time? |
|
I'm finding my skin has been extra dry this winter especially on my heels. They are slightly cracked and I'm not sure how I should treat them. My hands are constantly dry too, probably because I'm always washing them often. I use Vaseline Intensive Care aloe fresh hydrating body lotion cream and that seems to help a lot. Actually because my skin is sensitive, it's the only one that has been working for me for several years.
What do you do to keep your skin nice and soft? What products do you recommend for sensitive skin? What treatment do you recommend for slightly cracked heels?
I'm actually going to get a manicure and pedicure as a birthday pressie from my hubby and son on Wednesday, so I know my hands and feet will be feeling a lot better after that.

1. tooincome (329) | 11 months ago | its not just over the winter time, its all year round my skin is dry. lately, i've just been applying lotion every day and after i shower to help soften my skin. it's been working, however my elbow seems to get dry fast. i usually just bring a small bottle of lotion (i use johnson's softlotion moisturizer) with me and apply when needed. good luck!

2. LilMissB (620) | 11 months ago | I believe that it is the lack of sun that causes your skin to get really dry in the winter. It could also be because of the humidity. Those are just my guesses on why the winter is so much harder on your skin.
Anyways, I totally feel your pain. My skin gets really cracked and dried out in the winter as well and there is nothing that I have found that really mosturizes my skin. It seems that no matter how much lotion I put my skin just sucks it up and an hour later it is dry again. It is really bad when I shave. That is why I shave less in the winter time.
I have been told that if you put a really good lotion on your feet before you go to bed and cover your feet with socks, yah I know it kind of feels yucky to have lotion on your feet and then put socks over it, but it really helps. Sleep with the socks on and it will help keep the moisture of the lotion on your feet.

reinydawn (4236) | 11 months ago | I think you have a point about the lack of sun, although I'd never thought of that until now. We get Vitamin D from the sun, and that is good for the skin... Good thinking!!
But, I also wanted to make you the same offer I did to maddysmommy. I can send you a sample of a lotion that contains teatree oil which is great for healing. This lotion has worked wonders for my sister and some friends. You'll even see results within one day. One thing I love about this lotion is that it actually heals, not just moisturize, so the effects are long-lasting. PM me if you'd like to try some. You can also check out my Health Cafe from my profile to get a bit more info on this.
Have a great day!

maddysmommy (10990) | 11 months ago | I actually read your reply last night and tried it. I used the same lotion I've been using on my body on my heels and wore socks. They feel a little better but I would think I need to do it for several days.

LilMissB (620) | 11 months ago | Maddysmommy,
I hope it works. There is nothing worse than have dry cracked feet in the winter when you have to wear shoes on your feet most of the time. It makes them crack and hurt that much more. I totally feel your pain. Keep trying it for a few days and let me know if you get results. I am sure that it is going to take several days for your moisture to build back up in your feet, so you are right you will probably notice a difference in a couple of days.

| 3. natromana (24) | 11 months ago | A little tip if you want is vaseline, the petroleum jelly. It won't do anything to your sensitive skin. For your heels: Have a bath or at least soak your feet in warm water until the water cools down. Scrub them with a pumice stone or foot scrub. Pat them dry. Put a generous amount of vaseline. Rub it in. Then place each foot in a plastic lunch bag. Over that put on a pair of cotton socks. Now the best time to do this is before you sleep so you can get plenty of time for your heels to absorb the moisture but 1 hour would be good too. Then remove the socks and plastic and rub the extra vaseline in. You should have baby soft feet. For your hands: The same exact treatment as your feet except you don't have to soak them and DO NOT you a pumice stone on your hands. A facial scrub would be great. It's gentle enough but effective. And instead of socks wear gloves, unless you don't have gloves, hey!! sock will do as well:) Hope this helped If you need anymore beauty advice just let me know. I'm a qualified estheticain;)

5. AmbiePam (15397) | 11 months ago | I have this same problem in winter as well. My doctor actually told me something I didn't know. WAY back in the day, Aveeno lotion was actually prescription. Yes, my doctor is very old, so I guess that is how he knows it. Now just any Aveeno doesn't work for me. They have a relatively new kind out called Aveena Intense Relief Overnight Cream. It is awesome. It's great for hands, feet, whatever. And it isn't just for overnight, like the name might suggest. It is a really great product. I used to use Vaseline Intensive Care as well, but this is better. At least for me. Hope you get a good mani pedi!

| |
|
|
maddysmommy (10990) | 11 months ago | I have used Aveeno once, and it seemed to work with my dry skin too. Because I bought a large bottle of vaseline intensive care, which I think will take a year to use LOL I haven't bought anymore since. I'll make a note of the one you mentioned for next time. Thanks AmbiePam.

6. gracemanotoc (232) | 11 months ago | Hi there, I have dry skin on winter and my lips crack. What I do is use body butter in the morning and it stays till afternoon but If I need to reapply, i re-apply in the area. I also use Olay total effects for my face. It stays long especially if you use the total package, eye cream, night cream and the morning cream. I don't shower in the morning, I just do some minor washing like in my face, and private area and of course I apply deodorant and brush my teeth. I read an article that speaks about natural skin oil that is released during evening when you are sleeping. If I shower I might drain that supposedly help me with the winter cold. I take care of myself really well and even takes 1 hour every morning just for preparations.

maddysmommy (10990) | 11 months ago | Thanks gracemanotoc, I have not heard of body butter. That's a lot of time to spend on yourself each morning - with a 6 year old thats hard to do LOL

|
|
gracemanotoc (232) | 11 months ago | hello there, body butter smells really good..victoria secret has it but there are other brands that are cheaper and better than victoria. It comes in many flavor too, i like the sensual amber. I have a 4 year old too but I really make sure I have time for myself hehehe. So I feed him with many toys and ask to behave coz mommy`s taking a bath, my son understands as long as he has a good carton movie to watch. Happy Mylotting

7. KrauseHome (13462) | 11 months ago | Well, I am Diabetic, so I have a lot of problems with Dryer skin... the Winter months especially. I have to keep it from becoming Celulitis etc. as well because that can be dangerous as well. I have used many different things over time and some things work better than others, but not always for me. But I do the Best I can do and then hope for the Best.
| |

|
|
reinydawn (4236) | 11 months ago | I did not realize that diabetics had a problem with dry skin. My step-mother and an aunt are diabetics (only as they've gotten older and I don't think either of them is on medication) and I never even knew this about them. Have you every tried using products with teatree oil in them? Teatree oil is great because it absorbs into the skin and helps heal, not just moisturize. What I use is only available on-line, and although I don't have big problems with dry skin, I do use it a lot during the winter. I'll make you the same offer as I've made others - if you'd like, I can send you a sample to see if it's something that works for you. PM me if you want, or you can visit my profile to get to my Health Cafe for more information.
Good Luck to you!

maddysmommy (10990) | 11 months ago | My husband is also Diabetic and I've noticed his legs are very dry - like they have a white powder all over them. I have to keep reminding him to moisterize all the time but he just can't be bothered and I know it's important for Diabetics to take care of his feet.
Thanks for your reply KrauseHome.

8. mjanne (173) | 11 months ago | I also feel my skin very dry during the winter time. My face are slightly cracked. And my hands are dry too. So when winter time I usually use hand lotion cream to treat my hands. Drink a lot of water all the day to keep my skin from too dry. Eat more fruits is also a good way to protect your skin.

| 9. family4 (40) | 11 months ago | I have dry skin in the winter as well. This year it wasn't as bad until we went to a swimming party in early January. Then I have been very itchy. I think it is from the dry cold weather, I live in Canada so it is very cold here. I find I can't have as hot of showers as I would like because the hotter it is the drier i get later on, it feels like it zaps my mositure out of my body. I use either baby oil right out of the shower or the pink bottle of baby lotion i think it is johnson and johnson. We had to much baby products left over and someone has to use them and i find they work wonderfully. My husband has very dry and cracked heels, he uses gold bond cream and it helps him so much. They do have a sensitive version i believe. Enjoy your manicure and pedicure they will make your feet and hands feel better and probably help you feel great too.

maddysmommy (10990) | 11 months ago | My mum use to rub me down with baby oil when I was younger - skin felt nice the next day. I haven't used that in years. I might just get me a small bottle, thanks.
My husband also has very dry skin - I'll make a note of the gold bond cream and see if he wants to try some of that. Thanks family4 and welcome to Mylot.

10. highflyingxangel (9033) | 11 months ago | My skin is pretty dry in the winter time. I've found that drinking a lot of water, a few glasses of it a day and making sure to keep a nice bottle of lotion on hand (as in, whatever lotion works for you) around to keep putting it on all day is the best way to combat dry skin. Also, keeping areas more prone to dry skin covered when out in the wind and cold helps too. I know whenever I'm not wearing gloves or something, my hands get really dry rather quickly.

maddysmommy (10990) | 11 months ago | I've noticed that too when I'm around and about without gloves on. Drinking a lot of water would help too and I know I don't drink enough daily. Thanks for the tips highflyingxangel.
