February is Black History Month

I never really gave it much thought about Black history month in Canada. I did not even know you celebrated it there. I know it is Black History month here in the United States. I have been reading more about it since our new president is African American. It is very interesting to learn about history. I am a big history buff

Sad to say, I don't know much about black history month. I was raised in the south, where blacks lived in one small neighborhood. As a small child I never knew why they lived in that one small spot. My grandmother lived directly next to the neighborhood and always told me that's where they wanted to live. I was always sheltered to the ways things were done in my small town. Many of her closest friends were the ladies that lived in the neighborhood. I recall having to go and give my grandmother's books to one sweet lady and in return she would give my grandmother her newspaper. We would walk up there so they could talk (gossip). My parents were pretty clear on telling us that even though their skin color was different than mine, they had a name. That it was best to learn their name than just saying that black woman or black man. Besides all of that, my parents are racists because they have this belief that white people should only marry white people and vice versa.

I didn't know the real reason why February was chosen, I just thought that it was the month of happiness and love. After all the cruelty that we as white people put on them, this would be perfect month to dedicate to their history. Sounds corny, but that's what I always thought. Being Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglas were both born in February, it is fitting.

I don't know anything about Blacks in Canada, I know in the 1800's that blacks weren't treated any better in the North. I didn't think the same was being done in Canada, until now. I think the main black historical figure I admire the most is basically everyone's is Reverend Martin Luthor King, Jr. He saw past color, he saw past hatred, he saw a better world. I have always wondered what have been if some racist pig didn't kill him.
