Statins! Do you take them? email this discussion to a friend?

Do you take statins? I used to take Zocor, but I banned it from my pillbox last month. It was expensive and I became worried about some of the potential side effects. Maybe I should be worried about not taking it. But I'd rather take what is natural. Red rice yeast is what I take now, but I'm not sure how effective it is. What do you all take? Do you count on oat bran and garlic to do it for you?

I'd like to know what else might work.

I tried natural ingredients for controlling my cholesterol a while back. I did not have very good success. After a year of taking what it was I took my levels were about the same as when I started. I currently take zocor as well. My heart doctor likes the levels it keeps me at. I asked him about stopping it a while ago and he said no way he wants me to continue taking it because in addition to helping with the cholesterol it also can prevent heart attacks. I figure he is a heart doctor he should know that stuff. I am fortunate though because my medication is covered by my insurance.

What about the recent studens that show increased risk of heart attack for those taking these statins. My doctor said to stay on too, but I read stuff by other doctors that say they take their patients off. Who is right?

My doctor said I was at a much higher risk if I got off then if I stay on. He said that there is always a possibility that someone can be negatively effected but you have to go with the less risk.
