The unthinkable happened last Wednesday

when we took our daughter to her diet center to weigh in and get her menus. I went to the grocery store to pick up veggies and such while my husband stopped in at an electronics store. On my way back to collect the family, I passed a group of Girl Scouts selling their cookies and two tall teenagers arguing with someone in a car and an elderly gentleman sitting in a wheelchair trying to sell small bags of peanuts. When my husband, daughter and I got to our car, suddenly three guys got out of the car and came after the other two youths with chains. The elderly gentleman was caught in the middle of the group. My husband, who is recovering from six heart bypasses and several other problems was the only man who came to the elderly gentleman's defense although there were several taller, stronger men nearby or in the stores. Two female managers came out of the grocery to help. My question is, is my husband, who could in no way physically defend himself, the only real man left? He saw the elderly gentleman in danger and moved to help. Thank goodness, the young men broke up the fight and left the scene. The outcome could have been much different otherwise. Once upon a time, men took a stand; that night they cowered while one handicapped man helped another. I'm furious. Would you be?

I just want to see that I think your husband is an amazing man for doing that, I really do, and I am glad that you appear to be so proud of him as well. The situation does make me furious. The face that there seems to be so much fear around when it comes to youth, and the behaviour thereof, is just absurd. It would be so nice to live in a time, or place, where people didn't/don't have to have fear, and where they would stand up for one another. Your story gave me hope that perhaps there are people like that left, but I am not sure I will hold my breath just yet, sadly.

I believe there are others out there like my husband, but they are few and far between. Most talk tough; my man doesn't bother talking, he just acts. Today, a few months after this episode, Bruce had a massive stroke. He will not recover since he had not fully recovered from the heart bypasses. Laying on his back, unable to speak or move his right side, he's still my sweetheart and more man than most. Pray for him. If he is to move onward to heaven, bless his travels. If we are fortunate to keep him, give him the courage to smile when tears are near. Hugs to you for your kind letter.

Personally it is getting a little rediculous when things happen all around you and no one ever wants to get involved anymore, and just sit and watch something happen, and usually will not even take time if it is serious to even call 911. Why? Are they all guilty of something, or feel it is none of their business? I too remember a day when people used to be more caring and not afraid to get involved, and actually things were way better then for sure. I am not sure what it will take if it could ever get this way again, but then we can Dream can't we?
