There's no such thing as a 'teacup' dog breed!!! | | | | Ok, I need to rant for a minute. I am going absolutely insane by the vast amounts of people who are absolutely KILLING me with their ignorance towards dog breeds. The term 'teacup' [insert dog breed here] is a misnomer. If you have ever used that term in description to a dog, I urge you to STOP NOW! There are literally HUNDREDS of dog breeds recognized by the various respected governing bodies across the world, and not one of them recognizes a breed with the word 'teacup' in it's name. It is a term used by unscrupulous breeders to charge exorbitant prices for undersize puppies (I see 'teacup' dogs being advertised anywhere from $1000-3000 everywhere I go, whereas most moral breeders only sell their REGISTERED puppies of normal stature for $800-1500). This is not just my opinion, but also the opinion of all the governing bodies which recognize the Chihuahua breed. The American Kennel Club only recognizes "Chihuahuas - Long coated or smooth coated." They do not differentiate within the breed for various sizes, only that the breed itself is within The Toy Group. But many breeders and owners continue to use this label for their under-sized puppies in an attempt to attach a greater importance to them and subsequently a higher price. Do not be fooled by the claims of breeders who claim they have 'Teacup Chihuahuas!' If you have been telling people you own one, do us all a favor and stop using this incorrect term. Your ignorance is showing! Occasionally, within a litter, there may be a puppy that is unusually small. This is a small Chihuahua/Yorkshire Terrier/Pomeranian. Not a teacup. In fact, years ago, they were referred to as 'runts' and in most circles of people in the doggy know, they still are. Runts should NEVER fetch a higher price than their normal sized counterparts. If you encounter a 'breeder' specializing in 'teacups' or selling their 'teacup' or 'miniature' sized dogs for more than their normal sized littermates, you have encountered someone in it for the money, not for the love and well-being of their dogs. They are undersized which often makes them prone to broken bones, luxating patellas, lower immune systems, trouble conceiving and naturally delivering litters, and in the case of the breeder with dollar signs in their eyes (the one I mentioned above), those things are all the more likely to happen, because the person concerned with the almighty dollar and not their dogs' health, likely does not do health testing and clearances for hips, elbows, eyes, hearts, blood defects and patellar joints. If you want a small breed, research small breeds, pick one out, contact some show breeders about getting a puppy. You can even mention that you aren't interested in showing, and that if one is on the smaller end of the scale by the time they're ready to go home, you'd like that one. Runts do crop up in a lot of litters, and most breeders are happy to sell them (sometimes at a reduced price) to a great home, because all good breeders like their 'furkids' in a good situation. Just don't ask for a 'teacup'! | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |

| | While I own 2 chihuahuas, I don't follow all of the breeds accepted as 'official' by the AKC. However, I'm sure that breeds are added to the list all the time, aren't they? Or is the list the same now as it was 100 years ago? There was a time (and it probably still happens) that breeders would routinely destroy dogs who were too big, or too little to fit withing the guidelines set forth by the AKC, as they are not 'show quality'. If it helps to find loving homes for these dogs, instead of destroying them...why exactly is that so upsetting? As far as the price for them goes, if there is more of a demand than a supply, it drives the price up. If they become more commonplace, I'm sure the price will drop. I would think that the use of 'teacup' is more of a description and not intended to be a new breed. Similar to advertising puppies with a color description in addition to breed. Or (for chihuahuas) listing them as 'apple headed' or 'deer headed'. Those are not terms used by the AKC either, but is decriptive of the dog itself. | | | | | | | breepeace (2268)

| | Actually, since all breeds on both the AKC and CKC lists had to originate somewhere in the world, many of them might not be accepted by the AKC, but were accepted by the registering body in their home country or region for decades prior. Population of the breed in the US accounts for which dog breeds gain recognition and which don't. It's a very tough process to have your dog accepted and recognized by the American Kennel Club, even as a Miscellaneous breed, even if that breed has been recognized in it's homeland for more years than the AKC has been in existence. There are very strict guidelines pertaining to the creation of new dog breeds or varieties. Since most of the 'new breeds' don't pertain to those guidelines, the likelihood of them one day gaining status as a purebred breed is very small. And I highly doubt that breeders today would destroy dogs that are not show quality. Show quality dogs are those with which breeders use to perpetuate their lines. Usually only 1-2 puppies from each litter can really be deemed 'show quality'. The rest are pet quality and still fetch a fair price. Since most of the breeders I know usually end up paying far more for health clearances, vet visits and registration papers than they receive back for the puppies -- destroying them would be akin to shooting oneself in the foot. Obviously pet quality puppies are just as capable of being a great quality pet as a show quality dog is, and they are sold and live out their lives as beloved companions. The only not show quality puppy I have ever seen destroyed in over 18 years in the fancy was a puppy born with a cleft palate. Since the puppy's chance of survival and likelihood of flourishing was almost nil, the vet recommended the puppy be put down lest it suffer. Obviously a dog who is smaller or larger than it's counterparts would be unique just by default. Not because he or she was bred to be that way, but simply because nature dictated that he or she would be a different size than it's littermates. An oversize puppy or a 'runt' is never hard to find a home for, and do not command a higher or a lower price than their other pet-quality littermates. I have seen far too much evidence to indicate that breeders of so-called 'teacup' dogs only breed for size (and not health or temperament) in order to command a higher price. If it were simply a question of finding homes for dogs in need of them by adding a cutesie name to the real breed's name, then there isn't really any harm (unless it perpetuates and then people believe that's a real breed, and start breeding them for profit), but if people are purposely breeding smaller-than-normal dogs (which quite likely have health problems), attaching an astronomical price onto them because they are a 'rarity' and then flooding the market (and they are!), then there is a problem. This isn't a simple case of supply and demand -- it's a case of people paying more money for something they understand to be 'special' or 'unique' (because who doesn't love something special or unique?). And the backlash (example: thousands of dollars for vet bills for a dog with joint troubles, trouble breathing, etc) is sometimes more than they can deal with in the end. No, people aren't using the word 'teacup' as a descriptive. In dealing with dogs and the public for as long as I have been, I have had more than my fair share of people willing to tell me about their Purebred 'teacup poodle'. Knowing that there are only 3 sizes of poodles (Standard, Miniature and Toy), I do my best to try to educate but often encounter a brick wall because "My breeder told me teacups are a new size, they just aren't registered yet". No. Teacups breeds don't exist. | | | | | | | Find the Dog For You Learn About Different Dog Breeds. Sign Up For The Free Newsletter! www.DogChannel.com | add comment | | | |

| | Hi bree~ OMG! Are you serious? Do you mean that all the times that I have seen owners advertise that they have "teacups" of whatever breed that they are lying? There are no such thing as a "teacup" in any breed? I know someone who bought a "teacup" mini pin for alot higher price! The person selling it made it sound like it was "special" and therefore worth more money! And now you are saying that it was only the runt of the litter and probably not good for breeding? How can they do that? The person that bought this dog has probably bred it by now if that was even possible! I hate to think what might have happened! I am very upset for the dog, I hope that it is ok! I don't speak to the owner anymore since he is my X-boyfriend so I don't know how this "teacup" is doing. You would not believe how many people advertise this all the time like it is a special breed! They have alot of people fooled! I don't know that much about the different dog breeds and I always thought that it was a real breed being that I have seen so many advertisements for them all the time! | | | | | | | breepeace (2268)

| | Although not definitive, and definitely not accurate (obviously there is no such breed as a Cockapoo, that being a Cocker Spaniel/Poodle cross) this wiki entry is a good starting point for the journey that is the realization that "Teacup" breeds are just a marketing ploy: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_dog_breeds No where on there are is the word teacup listed with the breed name. In fact, the entry on poodles, which are one of the most popular breeds to have the teacup moniker, states it pretty clearly: "The terms royal standard, teacup, and tiny teacup are marketing names, and are not recognized by any major kennel club." ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poodle ) I like how Annie put it.. there's a sucker born every day. I just want to do my part to ensure none of my friends become one. I would also be curious to see if your ex's "teacup Min-Pin" stayed as dimunitive as it was advertised. Many times the puppies tend to grow much larger than stated, but people still maintain that they are of the 'teacup variety' because no one likes to admit they were conned. Negating that, chances are the dog quite likely did have health problems. Breeding animals specifically for one physical trait -- be it color, size or coat pattern -- often means the more important traits like temperament and health are given much less thought. Especially when people are willing to stoop to the low of selling a perfectly run of the mill toy breed dog for thousands of dollars by advertising it as 'rare' or 'unique'. They're in it for the money -- not the love of dogs. | | | | | | | Potty Training a Puppy We have the solution. It's fast and easy! www.ModernPuppies.com | add comment | | | |

| | Yep, seems to me like just a marketing "scam" to overvalue something that is normally undervalued. Selling off all the runts as 'special'. Brilliant, really. Did you know that they started a breed of mini-sheep called "Babydoll Southdowns", exactly the same way. They selected the runts and only bred them to get a miniature sheep "Pet" breed. Whatever, I don't bother. There's a sucker born every day, it seems. Some people just want to believes stuff, ya know. And some believe that the 'runts' make the best pets. Prolly because you 'saved' them, so they are so thankful. I dunno. But in the real world, runts are the rejects, certainly do not afford higher prices. Sold off, if you can get anything for them. | | | | | | | | | | Red Dog Collection 20% OFF on your First Purchase. | | I agree. I want a small dog for my next dog, but first I would never buy a pet. I adopt unwanted animals and give them a good home. I would never get a dog from a breeder. The shelters and rescues have more than enough to choose from. The reason I want small dog is so I can lift her. I can't lift the ones I have now. Anything over 10 pounds is too much for me. To get what they mistakenly call "teacups" the breeders need to breed the runt to another runt and hope all the offspring will be small. If they aren't the mother could suffer or die in giving birth. Not good. It's very bad to breed a runt of a litter. They need to be sterilized for their own health. Actually I believe all dogs and cats should be sterilized and no one should breed until there are homes for every animal born. | | | | | | | | | | Paradise for Pets Outdoor yards for fun in the sun and temp. controlled runs at night. www.paradise4pets.com | add comment | | | |
