1. Downunder_dude (385) | 10 months ago | I don't defrag my system anywhere near as often as I should.
My hardrive is pretty big, so when I do run a defrag it takes half a day to finish. That's the main reason I don't do it very often.
A defrag just compacts all your files together and ultimately svaes space on your system. In day to day use files get saved everywhere, which results in a lot of empty, wasted space of your hard drive.

Not only does this waste a lot of space, but it also makes the computer take a lot more time and processing power to find them; resulting in the computer running much slower than it should. When you run a defragment program it simply finds these files and puts them back in space saving, easy to find places.
Once a week is generally a good time to run a defragment program. If your computer gets a lot of use though, or if you have a ton of programs installed on it, you might want to run it 2-3 times a week to make sure it doesn't get bogged down. Defragging really does speed up the computer a lot, and some people claim it makes your computer last longer since the CPU doesn't have to work as hard.

I don't the defragment. Linux Ubuntu defrags at booting when a detection of fragmented file system. The whole process are usually done in less than a minute. The occurrence of fragmented files in Linux are not always happening frequently (nevertheless if the harddisk is already old and has already physical damaged and can not handle lots of bad sectors). Linux are more stable and reliable File System (such as jfs, reifs, xfs or the like) than MS Windows' NTFS, fat32 or the like.
^_^ Thanks and Enjoy!.... myLot!....

6. pmspratik (204) | 10 months ago | Defragment feature in your system really helps you to manage the files in one place. No doubt that people often install new software, copy files and delete them when not needed. A certain type of space is formed while you delete a file having the files to spread over cause the disk to be slow. So the defragment just temporarily copies the files to a free space and then re arranges all the files in proper order so that you computer can easily find the files. Well defragmenting the disk might need to be performed once a week but once a month is enough. But don't defrag you computer too much like once in a day cause that might also cause your hard drive to crash. Anyways enjoy.

8. ionsquare (470) | 10 months ago | Hi, I think the defragmentation is to arrange the files in your computer drive so that they are not fragmented all over. This allow the computer to function more speedily. I don't fragment the computer that often as I don't find any difference before and after defragmentation.
