Going Digital, going Green

Go green by going digital. Digital camera are much better than film cameras in more ways than most people think.

Digital cameras let you view the pictures you have taken, unlike film, immediately after shooting them. With film, you have to wait until the negatives are developed before you know if your shots are good or not. This saves you both time and money, especially if you are a professional photographer, but even if you’re not.

By going green with digital you’re helping the environment in several ways. One way is by preventing the use of chemical developers that are typically not disposed of properly by both photo finishing outlets and dark room developers alike.

You’re also saving on packaging, as you’re not buying endless rolls of film or disposable cameras to be thrown out after development. By going digital, you only have to purchase memory cards, and the packaging is recyclable, which is a big plus.

Digital photo finishing costs less as there are no chemicals being used, no fancy machinery used to develop your pictures. All that’s needed to develop your digital photos is an ordinary photo printer, paper and ink. It’s so simple nowadays, and there’s no printing any shots you don’t want, so there’s no paper waste.

With digital photography, photos are stored on a memory card, the type of card you purchase will depend on the kind of camera you get. Not all memory cards are compatible with all cameras.

There is no risk of film overexposure, since there is no film. You don’t risk damaging a roll of film if something jams in the camera as there are no moving parts involved with the memory cards.

Memory cards will not degrade over time, unlike film that has an expiry date, so this is also an asset when preventing film waste. There’s simply a small memory chip in the card that stores the photos as small digital files until you’re ready to view them.

Batteries have come a long way in the last few years, you can also cut down on waste by purchasing rechargeable batteries. Regular disposable batteries don’t work as well on most digital cameras as they just don’t have the power to last long enough to take a lot of pictures.

Even batteries claiming to be ideal for digital cameras are not always ideal. The company that has made these batteries is just trying to get you, the consumer to shell out the money to buy their product, no matter how inferior it may well be.

With rechargeable batteries, you simply charge them up, put them in the camera and go. When the wear out, just charge them again and you’re ready to go. You’re only using a little bit of electricity to do this, and it’s a lot better on the environment. It will cost you less in the long run as well, as we all know that saving money is very important.

Going digital is a great way to save money and the environment at the same time, so go on and upgrade. You’ll be glad you did.

Good for you, feels good doesn't it?

When I made the transition years ago, I was so happy. I've got old film cameras still waiting to be developed, and will do so eventually, but otherwise I will never go back to film again.

Well, yeah. butt! You can't get as high of quality as you can with some of the older cameras that still use film. That's not entierly true though if you buy some of those super expensive digital cameras..

I get great quality with the camera I have and it wasn't super expensive.

I've never used an older camera, so I can judge for myself, but I know I didn't do well with film cameras.

I got my first digital camera in 2004, an Olympus, that was a present from my ex-boyfriend. I bought my second digital camera in 2006, another Olympus with a powerful zoom. I was sad when it developed a fault and spent a long time researching cameras with the help of my brother-in-law. I decided to get a Fuji with an excellent zoom because I have many XD cards that I bought when the Olympus camera.

I felt so happy going digital and you have reminded me of just how green it is. I love traveling and when I was 20 years old I took so man photos that I wouldn't like to estimate how much film I got through. When I was taking photos of sea animals a film camera was like a nightmare. Often out of 36 photos that I developed only 4 would be good enough. With digital viewing and deleting if necessary is possible.

Now when I pack I take my camera, my memory cards which take up very little space and four batteries. I don't have the expense and bother of purchasing film like in Hong Kong and Singapore I remember buying twelve films and even had 36 exposures. I have a set of rechargeable batteries nowadays.

With film being so expensive, it's not worth it anymore.

To develop it and risk your shots not turning out, that's a waste of time.

I'm so glad that I can delete anything I don't want and don't have to worry about nothing not turning out.

I've always known that digital cameras are better for the environment because you save paper by printing less and deleting the photos you don't want, and also because you don't have to use the harmful chemicals to develop your photos. But you make a lot of other really great points too! You should publish an article about this!
