Long ago there was a evil king named Hiranyakashyap who wanted everyone to stop worshiping gods and start worshiping him. However his young son Prahlad did not stop worshiping to god Shri Vishnu. Angered by this Hiranyakashyap deviced a evil plan with his sister Holika to kill his son. Holika had the boon that fire would not harm her. Holika said she would take Prahlad and sit on blazing fire. At night in the presence of the citizens Holika took Prahlad and sat on fire. Prahlad was still praying to Lord Vishnu. As time passed Prahlad remained unharmed and Holika started burning. Surprised by the flame burning her body, she shouted why was she getting burned when she had the boon of not being affected by fire. At that time a heveanly voice said, the boon was given to protect herself and not for evil purpose. Hence her boon did not work.
This event is celebrated as Holi where people pray to god and lit bonfire. This was done yesterday night. People remember the story of Prahlad where good triumphed over evil. Today people celebrate with colours and water. It is also in memory of beloved young god Krishna and his male and female friends playing with colours.
Today Holi is celebrated by applying dry and water colours on others. This day is not restricted to only Hindu celebration. It is celebrated by people of all religion and all ages.
I have added egreeting for all Mylotians. Click on it to view it full size.

I liked your comment that even though you don't celebrate Holi, you respect the culture. I believe everyone should have such thoughts and appreciate other culture and religion.
