The e-cig sounded way too good to be true. I've been waiting for this as somebody always finds something wrong with EVERYTHING!!! It seems we had a discussion here on why smokers should switch over to the e-cig. Have you switched &, if yes, will you go back to regular cigarettes or do you find the FDA to be a useless waste of the taxpayer's money??? What are your feelings about the e-cig??? The FDA has been teetering on a ruling since last summer. Wonder what is taking them so long???

Are e-cigs good for you???

Well they might or might not be bad for you but they might be better for you than real ones. If you have someone who has tried everything and still cannot give up. Patches do not work, prescription medicine does not work etc maybe these would actually help get the person off them.

I know someone who has tried every product on the market and failed to quit, the best result was to reduce smoking. I have not heard of these so they are probably not available in Australia but maybe they will provide help to those people who cannot quit.

I just did some research and it appears that these are illegal in Australia which is probably why I have never heard of them before. A pity and it seems that it might help people who really struggle to break the habit. As an ex smoker I know that the habit is harder to break than the addiction to nicotine.

I can't help but feel the tobacco companies are behind the hype against the e-cig. I'm just as sure that in a few years we will learn the true damage they do. However, I can't help but believe they are better than real cigs!!!

I am not a smoker but I don't think inhaling anything other then good clean air is a good idea. I wonder if it smells as bad as cigarettes? And I have more than enough chargers -ipod, computer, palm, phone, camera. oh I have to go home and plug in my cigarette..does that sound weird or what?

Just some random thought

Also, how many kids will get the idea that they can smoke e-cigs and then smoke them to be cool...No, I think it should be prescription..an aid to help people quit. OTC for these is a really bad idea.

Obviously good clean air is better - where do you find that these days?

E-cigs actually have no smell at all, there is nothing burning, the liquid in the cartridge is being heated - pretty much making "steam" to inhale. On the exhale its water vapor as 99% (or close to that) of the nicotine is absorbed.

If kids have the $100 or so to put out to buy an e-cig (they'd probably need a credit card to purchase one as well) then its the parents fault not the e-cig.
Why should the general public parent everyone's kids???

Wow we don't have them here and this would be the first that I have heard of it. I can not believe that one, I wonder how the whole thing would work. I don't anything should be put into place to replace the old thing. I think if they are going to introduce new habits, why not introduce something that will be of benefit to the whole health system.

Okay. I guess I am here to educate those that don't understand the electronic cigarette - or personal vaporizer as we call it. I was a chain smoker for 36 years. Some of you may understand that. Some of you may not. All you really need to understand about it, is that it's not good. Hundreds of carcinogins are contained in the smoke of cigarettes. Many of you understand that.

However, nicotine is not one of them. Many of you DON'T understand that.

The FDA has understood this fact that many of you don't know for many, many years. It's not the nicotine, it's the smoke that kills. Nicotine in small doses is completely safe. This is why nicotine patches and gum are sold over the counter. They are deemed safe. Everyone with me so far?

The personal vaporizers simply vaporize a small dose of nicotine, along with propylene glycol (deemed safe), into a warm mist/steam/vapor. There is NO smoke, no second-hand smoke either, there are NO carcinogens. You can use them in hospitals, around babies, in your doctor's office, even in church -- and you won't kill anyone. Everyone with me so far?

Good.

If you're a smoker, try the PV. Since I've used this device for nearly 4 months I have quit smoking, got my stamina back, I don't snore anymore, my lungs have cleared up, my sinuses are back with my sense of smell, and I can now taste food just like a non-smoker. My nicotine addiction is still there, but it is replaced by a healthy alternative -- the personal vaporizer. Everyone with me so far?

I will likely outlive my non-smoking friends now. I am delighted.

Why has the FDA not done anything yet? Because there is nothing wrong with these devices that they can point a crooked finger at. Nothing. Everyone with me so far?

Good.

I know very little about them but I think after reading this discussion I am gonna do a little research about it so I can learn more. Take care and happy mylotting to you as well. happy

I use the e-cig and love it, I smoked cigars for 8yrs and the e-cig is the only thing i know of that has helped several smokers stop smoking....I personaly think it is the best thing sense the wheel, and i truly feel it has to be better for me then cigars or a real cig. There is no tar or other bad cemicals in them..I have noticed sence i have started using the e-cig my breathing is so much better i dont smell like smoke and yes i feel alot better aswell so i say rock on e-cigs and yes they are alot cheaper then cig. or cigars.

That's GREAT to hear!!! My thought is if you could quit using the NO nicotine liquid, it must not be the nicotine in cigarettes that causes the addiction. Most people aren't as serious as you are about quitting & they abuse the e-Cig like they did cigarettes. The one thing I've learned in my lifetime is everything we do is BAD for us!!! Even drinking water has become bad for us!!! cry` Anything in excess is bad for us!!!

It's the first time I'm reading about this.. shocked
I've been looking for solutions and ways to quit smoking. Thought going cold turkey might be a good idea but apparently, many says it's not.

If anything, this e-ciggie ain't providing any of those, I don't think there should be any transition at all, unless it can help to reduce the urge of smoking. So far, this hasn't been sold in my region. cool I might purchase if there are already just for curiosity's sake.. wink

myLot reputation of 94/100. LadyMarissa (2693)   ranked 128 out of 11,268 in health  5 months ago

I quit cold turkey & didn't have a problem with it at all!!! I had tried quitting before, but my heart wasn't in it so cold turkey did not work. However, once I really made up my mind that I had to quit for my own good, I threw them away & never looked back. It was a little difficult the first 2 days. After that I had NO problems!!!

The e-cig is sold online so you may want to check into them & maybe even see if you can start your own line in your region.

The FDA*study* was an attempt to make the e-cig look as bad as they could. Instead of telling the general public that they were testing the e-cig against a nicotine inhaler instead of a regular cigarette and that the chemical used in*antifreeze* that they found in 1 of 18 illegally seized cartridges was only in a trace amount, they decided to mention*antifreeze* and then let all the fear mongereres have at it w/regards to getting the big*story* out. I have to admit that this was quite effective, but it took a lot of non-thinking Americans that believe everything they see or read to power this illusion! What the FDA didn't say in the press release is that the same trace amounts of this chemical*forget the exact name at the moment* exist in the nicotine inhaler and that it also exists in much higher concentration in combusted tobacco smoke! I read their entire report and there's plenty of data out there to support my claim about the higher amounts of this chemical in regular, legal, non-banned tobacco cigarettes!
I leave it to you to draw your own conclusions..

THANK YOU Robbie!!! You don't see shock nor surprise on my face!!! The government has been doing this to us for almost 40 years that I can remember. Just about the time you were born, they decided that the saccharine in diet sodas would give us cancer. So they did an all out campaign to remove the cancerous saccharine from the diet sodas. Years later it was revealed that we'd have to drink 200 cans per day in order to get cancer. I drink a LOT of soda, but NO where near 200 cans/day!!!! Americans have become somewhat like sheep. They say they don't trust the government...then they follow blindly with NO questions!!! I had been a proponent FOR the e-cig; so, when the negative info came out, I felt it was my duty to share. I don't think I ever believed it, but felt it was my duty to tell all those I had said you should consider the e-cig the negative side of its use so they could decide for themselves!!! I'll admit that I didn't even attempt to read the report. I believe the tobacco companies were pushing the FDA to find something (or should I say ANYTHING) wrong with them so the public at large would freak out & stop using them. About 20 years ago I had a bout with depression. I don't like taking prescription meds so I chose St Johns Wort. It was very effective & cost efficient also. The drug companies were losing money because SJW was working so well. Then the FDA came out with some BS excuse to pull SJW from the shelves so those suffering from depression had NO other remedy except the costly scripts. I could go on & on, but I don't want to bore anybody. So, once again, THANK YOU for enlightening us on how we're being taken as fools once again!!!

I began smoking 41 years ago at the age of 19. Back then smokers greatly outnumbered non-smokers. At the first company I worked for nearly everyone from the CEO on down smoked. At Christmas we were all given a bonus, box of chocolate and a carton of our favorite smokes.

Many years later I tried in vain to quit. The patch, gum etc. NOTHING worked. I was a chain smoker of 4-5 packs a day for 41 years.

Several months ago I heard about these things they called e-cigarettes on a radsio broadcast. The host of the show told how she had begun using them and they were working for her. It made me do some preliminary research and finally ordered one to try.

That was back in April of this year. For the past 3-1/2 months I have not had a single cigarette. My breathing is normal again. My senses of smell and taste have returned. The thought of having to go back to smoking cigarettes is not an option as long as I can continue to get supplies for the e-cigs.

I smoked for 45 years. I began using an electronic cigarette on 3/27/2009 and no longer smoke any tobacco cigarettes. Here are the "bad" things that have happened to me as a result:
1. The wheezing stopped.
2. I stopped coughing up junk in the AM
3. Blood pressure went down to 117/79.
4. I have more stamina - Was able to keep up with the kids on a walk around the lake yesterday.
5. No more burning holes in things.
6. No more smelling like an ash tray.
7. No more annoying those around me with 2nd hand smoke.
8. No weight gain

And yes, I did try just about everything and this was the the only thing I found that allows me to refrain from smoking without having to give up being able to think, reason, remember, and concentrate.
