How was your last high school reunion? |
|
Were you excited to see your former classmates/batchmates? Did you have so much fun? How often should we have school reunions, anyway? Is every 5 years too much? How about 10? I just got an email from a HS classmate and she wants to organize one this year and she is asking if I could be part of her planning committee. I haven't responded yet as I am half hearted on this. The last one we had was about 10 years ago and somehow, I don't think we need to have another one soon. I'd appreciate it if you can share your view on this. Have a nice day!

elmolovesu (382) | 9 months ago | Hi underdogtoo. I have attended the first one we had and I agree with you, some of those who were jerks back then have remained such...there were a few, though, who have tremendously changed for the better. Thanks so much for sharing..Have a great day!

3. mandoliv (445) | 9 months ago | Good morning! Well, I have kind of a bad reunion experience...which has made me sort of anti-reunion, although I wish it hadn't. I think 5 years is too much...it sort of takes away from the specialness of it all. When I was in college, I ran into a guy from high school. One of the popular guys, and he was on the reunion committee. They were planning a 5 year one. I was really excited about it, and looking forward to it. Well, not only did I never get invited, I found out later, that i wasn't the only one. The small group of popular kids on the committee only invited 'certain' classmates to the event. Later on, they said there were alot of people they couldn't find...but heck, I saw that guy almost every day and I lived down the street! It really hurt, maybe more than it should have. I felt it was unbelievably immature and selfish. It bothered me, and still does, that people like that were considered 'popular' and better than the rest of us, when in fact they were not what would be considered good role models. I suppose I do take things too personally but it is so hard not to.
I've gone to one with my DH, and it was nice...although I felt a bit left out because it wasn't my school at all. DH said that he was really excited about it, but afterwards he felt sort of meloncholy; like maybe it was too much of a look into the past, and made him feel old. He says he would rather focus on the future. Then again, he had a rough time during high school.
Wow...I can't believe how clearly I can remember these moments!! You really got me thinking today!!

elmolovesu (382) | 9 months ago | Hi mandoliv. I'm sorry if I made you rekindle those memories...so sorry to hear about your experience, too. Based on the details of your response, I'm inclined to think that what those self-appointed popular classmates of yours had was not really a batch reunion...it was actually just a gathering of their circle of friends. They may have thought that they were popular back in those days but after stepping out of school and entering the real world, I'm sure they've had their share of disappointments. It was probably the reason why they organized that reunion...they wanted to feel good in their own little world. Thank you for sharing and have a great day! Be happy!

4. OLIJULSAR (1063) | 9 months ago | I have never been to one of my reunions. I don't know why, just never went. I graduated in the early 70's and kids back then were about like they are now except not quite as violent. Drugs and trying to grab a smoke during school was the thing to do and not get caught. The small group of friends that I hung out with everyday sort of scattered all over the US when we graduated. I am still in contact with some of them and as far as I know they have never returned home for a reunion either. Why do people want to go just so they can listen to people brag about syuff they don't have. I am just as happy staying away and remembering things the way they were then.

6. clorissa123 (3525) | 9 months ago | I never had one myself, because ever since high school, we lost contact. I don't really enjoy my high school years anyway, and I don't want to reunion again. I felt shame of to meet everyone now, because I didn't make my millions yet. Probably someone from my high school is already doctor or lawyer already.

8. HelloMickey (1096) | 9 months ago | I never have a reunion, as no one want to do it in my high school. It is poor that no one wants it. I am particularly jealousy when I saw my hubby went to his high school reunion.

10. Toofancy (227) | 9 months ago | I have been to two reunions, and they were both a blast! We actually do our reunions differently than most schools. We do a combination of years at the same time (1968-1973, or something like that). And we don't do it at 5, 10, 20 years, obviously, since we combine all of those graduating classes together. (In other words, when we have one, it might be my 10th year, but someone else's 15th year.) I am sure they have had more reunions that I did not attend. (I haven't been to one in about 15 years). But they always spread the word and advertise it on Classmates.com. I have never been on the planning committee. I just showed up for the fun! But I think 10 years is a good time to have another one. The longer you go without having one, the less your chances are that you will be able to get everyone together. People lose touch, or (heaven forbid) pass away. But that is just my personal opinion. Since it has been so long for me (15 years), I am not sure I want to go to a reunion now because I have gained so much weight that I don't really want anybody from school to see me right now.

elmolovesu (382) | 9 months ago | Hi Toofancy. I'm glad that you enjoyed both reunions that you have attended. But don't let the weight issue keep you from attending another one...to be honest, I think you look great(that's your photo, right?) Thank you for sharing your opinion. Have a happy day!
