Do you celebrate this day? If so what do you do? My family does the whole cornbeef and cabbage meal. I dont really it, it does smell good, but not of my taste. Im irish and i guess its a big deal for us. Alot of places around town go all out, with the green beer some places with have rides and it will be crazy around town and of course the cops will be out. Happy St Pattys Day

I used to hate corned beef and cabbage any time of the year when I was a kid. Some of my kid's friends were Irish and hated it too. I think I may have figured out why. Most people put that corned beef in a pot and boil it or put it in the oven to cook. It is a really tough grade of meat. I used to hate the salty shoe leather experience.

Here is the way I like it. Put that piece of "corned beef" in a crock pot. Now add some water, onions, potatoes, carrots, and cabbage if it will all fit. Sometimes I have to make the cabbage separate with the juices. There is an important ingredient in all of this that takes away the saltiness of the meat. It is the potatoes. They soak up a lot of the salt in the meat. If you don't like salty potatoes either get rid of them or give them to the people who don't care. The crock pot should cook this until the meat comes apart with a fork. YaaaaaHooooooh! Now you can chew the stuff.

My mother liked to make a white sauce (butter, flour, and milk) and then add the carrots and cabbage, cut up, to put over those salty potatoes. Don't add anymore salt to the meal. Hide the salt shaker. A little pepper is all you might need.

When I served it this way, every Irish kid jumped right in and a few of the outsiders too. Everyone loved it. My German husband can't wait for St. Patty's Day with this menu.

Me myself I don't do it on account that I am not, but I know of folk who do and go out for the day. Nothing wrong with that I would say. I do wish the ones who are celebrating the day to please enjoy St Patricks Day and have a grand old time!!
