St. Patrick's day, beer, snakes or massacre  email this discussion to a friend?

dos anyone know just what St. Patrick's day is really all about. I think this is something that people should talk about. As thousands of frat boy flood drunkenly into the streets to try match up with a bunch of overly promiscuous upper crust super preppy girls, I think that we should find a way to change this day to a day remorse. Maybe Columbus day will be next.

St Patricks is the patron saint of Ireland. The purpose of St Patricks day is to celebrate Ireland and all things Irish basically. Its on the 17th of March because thats said to be the day he died. Why would it be changed to a remorseful day as its supposed to be a celebration. I dont exactly know why you have tagged this post with massacre because St Patrick wasnt massacred. He was supposedly kidnapped from Britain by pirates and sold into slavery in Ireland when he was 16. He escaped to Gaul and became a priest. After reurning to Ireland to convert it to Christianity and banish the snakes he retired to County Down and died when he was around 91. Thats all according to legend anyway. Eveybody in Ireland is a bit merry on St Patricks Day,the few that live there anyway. I just go to the races at Cheltenham with all the others. The queen was there this year !!!

I was never insinuating that St. Patrick was massacred. I was thinking more of the "snakes". Or the poor people that have been represented in history with an association to serpents and the devil. And I'm not so sure that the Irish at the time really appreciated being converted to Catholicism. Like most holidays with religious origins though ( christmas and easter adn valentines day ect.) I don't see the meaning being that important to those that celebrate anymore. I'm almost glad that people just blindly celebrate these days and have a good time. It does sadden me to see the lack of historical education on the origins of these days in the US public school systems. Thanks for your reply all the same. This is why I left no explanation to the origin of the day. I figured I'd leave it up to people to tell the dozens of reasons they think that St. Patrick became a saint. Poor poor pagan people. Too bad that freedom of religion wasn't a bigger idea back then. Heck, even I got drunk and had fun with my friends. Thanks mike. good to hear the queen was out and about. cheers
