I really don't think the endings of Neon Genesis Evangelion are sad.

The TV ending was a deconstruction of the characters' persona, and for me it was a well-executed one. It tried to explain and express the minds of the characters. The visuals, though cheap-looking and experimental, sent the messages each character wanted to say. That for me is enough to be satisfied.

End of Evangelion is a different story. Is it a sad ending? I don't think so. Though it dwells much more on the events leading to the End, it remained character driven. The characters' action is what drives the story, and not the events themselves. Those who find End of Evangelion sad or disturbing should take a glance of it some more. Evangelion wasn't really meant for otaku pandering, as much as its director is concerned.
