How good are you at self defense? email this discussion to a friend?

What will you do if someone attacks you? Are you confident that you can defend yourself? Do you know any techniques that will help you get out of that situation? Have you had any such experiences previously? Have you ever been in a fight? How prepared are you?

I am not really confident about myself right now. I happen to be quite fit but I don't know any martial art forms or self defence techniques other than kicking men in the wrong place if something bad happens lol. I would love to learn some kung -fu or something. What about you?

hey there well I have been doing lau gar kickboxing which is based more on street fighting, since I was 10, am currently quite highly graded without going into any details so I am pretty confident in handling any situation that arises.

Altho the easiest and simple way to avoid confrontation which I would always choose first, is to walk away.

Altho if someone attacks me i'd immobilise them and ring the police as am not into agression but if it comes my way yes I could and would handle myself.

Ooh Kickboxing is cool. Its nice that you are prepared to face any such situations. Yes it is always good to avoid any confrontations though

defo recommend getting into some form of martial art as people think its all about kicking the**** out of people its more about self discipline etc etc

and always better to leave the situation than to fight

That is just what i am doing now! I am not strong or tall enough, so i must have something or some special techniques to defend myself. Now i am learning chinese koofu almost everynight,Taiji,a famous martial art .I have see lots of books and video about it,and find it can strength your body fundamentally, what is more, it also is a good way for expanding life.
Just keep on,and i will get it.
However the most important matter to avoid fights, is not fists but words, so I will use my special techniques just at special situation.*^^*

I was into Thai boxing years ago. It's was an amateur sport so i trained for the sport but i think i can defend myself when the situation calls for it. I know some blocks and strikes and i know how to keep him a few meters away. It's the main reason why i joined Thai boxing anyway. Before, i couldn't throw a punch but right now, i'm quite confident.

hello nikky,
this is a good topic especially for women w00t

I took ARNIS or stick fighting as a PE in college. I was hoping to take taek won do but when I was about to enlist on a class, I almost fainted right on the spot. the students there are really good.high kicks and the instructor was a big man hahaha... toink. Talk about a tiny 17 year old girl looking dumfounded in a small dojo in the campusrasp... So I went back to the gym and look for other martial arts PE, I found ARNIS. It's good though. when you learn the basic fighting in arnis you can use any object to fight with. though I'm not a violent person and I don't like fighting, my only reason is to learn how to defend myself. So far, I haven't used it to anyone*wink*

uhm as for kicking, nikky. you can kick there where it hurts most hee hee... no skill needed. hahaha kidding. If in case I'm in a dire situation, I don't want to do that kinda not good for the guy's future lol... I don't want to carry a guilt that the guy won't be able to reproduce rasp a pepper spray is still a good defense, at least it wears off when they wash it...

myLot reputation of 92/100. nikky28 (570)   ranked 207 out of 19,447 in questions & answers  10 months ago

haha yeah pepper spray is better lol. Its great that you know some martial arts, must be fun learning it. I had never heard of the word Arnis before. Its cool how we come across new things in mylot!

myLot reputation of 88/100. kissieme (427)   ranked 2,796 out of 19,447 in questions & answers  10 months ago

hahaha. Nikky... yep, I had learned so much from mylot...

and it's good that at least I had given you an idea on Philippine martial arts, Arnis. You have to use two wooden stick mostly made from laminated rattan or from kamagong. my uncle on my mom's side has a pair of kamagong arnis. I was hoping I can have them hahaha but rasp never mind hahaha

I have a pair sticks before but I lent them to my dormmate who also enlisted in arnis but she never gave them back sad lol...

it's fun learning martial arts. there are times that we look weird on our stances that our teacher laughed at us. hahaha and I got my share of bruises and scars on practical exams cuz my partner, also a girl, is somewhat uhm what do you call that? someone who likes seeing someone get hurt lol. so she tried to hit so hard so many times that her stick would slide on mine and hit either my fingers or arm... weird much! lol... She got a B- by the way cuz our teacher didn't like her attitude and she failed the practical exams lol... Martial arts can be fun and good for people who can control their temper lol and not use the skill on hurting others. Maybe that's why our teacher gave a low grade for my partner rasp

yhesha12 (23)  10 months ago

I had taken several martial arts courses when im still in school... but sad to say, I cant apply them now coz i forgotten the techniques or the moves as I already quit a couple of years ago!!! ehhhehe

myLot reputation of 92/100. nikky28 (570)   ranked 207 out of 19,447 in questions & answers  10 months ago

haha that girl deserved to be failed. I think what you learnt at school should also have taken as a sport and her attitude is despicable. You had a nice teacher lol

myLot reputation of 88/100. kissieme (427)   ranked 2,796 out of 19,447 in questions & answers  10 months ago

hahaha. yeah. our teacher told me to continue it into joining the arnis club but I'm too focused at studying to put in time for extracurricular. I would've love to join though but I'm kinda scared of going from one place/university to another for competitions and stuff hahaha blush I get nervous easily in an audience lol... scaredy cat me... rasp

I have a black belt in Tae Kwon Do, and I also learned military combatives/combat hapkido while I was in the Army. I have lots of experience with submission grappeling, especially during my time in the Army, and only ever lost to one guy. I am pretty confident in my ability to defend myself, and I've been teaching self-defense to my wife and developing a martial arts curriculum based on my knowledge. I recommend martial arts training to everyone; even if you never use it for self defense, it can really help with building self-confidence and situational awareness, which in turn can help you avoid fights in the first place. Good luck and I hope you find a good school!

myLot reputation of 50/100. Anora_Eldorath (2605)   ranked 3,934 out of 19,447 in questions & answers  10 months ago

I really agree with situational awareness. Most confrontations and assaults can be avoided if people took the time to be aware of where they were at and what was going on around them.
