Every now and then, a story comes along that warms our hearts! Or does it?? |
|
In 1986, Steve Fish was on holiday in Kenya after graduating from University .
On a hike through the bush, he came across a young bull elephant standing with one leg raised in the air. The elephant seemed distressed, so Peter approached it very carefully. He got down on one knee, inspected the elephants foot, and found a large piece of wood deeply embedded in it. As carefully and as gently as he could, Peter worked the wood out with his knife, after which the elephant gingerly put down its foot. The elephant turned to face the man, and with a rather curious look on its face, stared at him for several tense moments. Steve stood frozen, thinking of nothing else but being trampled. Eventually the elephant trumpeted loudly, turned, and walked away.
Steve never forgot that elephant or the events of that day.
Twenty years later, Steve was walking through the London Zoo with his teenaged son. As they approached the elephant enclosure, one of the creatures turned and walked over to near where Steve and his son were standing. The large bull elephant stared at Steve, lifted its front foot off the ground, then put it down. The elephant did that several times then trumpeted loudly, all the while staring at the man.
Remembering the encounter in 1986, Steve could not help wondering if this was the same elephant. Steve summoned up his courage, climbed over the railing, and made his way into the enclosure. He walked right up to the elephant and stared back in wonder. The elephant trumpeted again, wrapped its trunk around one of Steve's legs and slammed him against the railing, rendering him unconscious instantly. The elephant then sauntered away, very content with his violent act.
Probably wasn't the same elephant!
Isn't it nice to have a story without the predictable happy ending for a change? I'm not sure what comments anyone can make here, but I wanted to share the story anyways. Maybe you can let me know if you also enjoy the occasional negative twist as well, rather than the standard endings we always seem to get with stories and movies and such.....

1. alokn99 (2911) | 9 months ago | I was wondering why the story did not end in the first instance, when the elephant decided to let Peter work out the peice of wood. It could have trampled him then. Negative twists in the end normally leave a very akward and sad feeling. Then there is also a moral which comes out of it. Maybe it was the same elephant and as much as elephants are supposed to have a good memory, this one had amnesia. Maybe it wanted the peice of wood stuck in it's leg like we humans decide to pierce ourselves with earings... and was taking revenge on Peter.
All said and done James it was a surprise ending and most would have expected a nice sombre, teary eyed reunion between the elephant and Peter.

2. riyasam (10824) | 9 months ago | thats a sad ending.you might be meaning those romantic mushy movies with predictable endings!!my mother used to tell us stories when we were children.one of them was that animals have very sharp memory and then she told the folloeing story of a elephant who asked for a bananna to a tailor who was eating bananna in his shop.the tailor in jest pricked the trunk of the elephant with his needle.some years later(tailor had become very sucessful by then),the same elephant passed by,saw the tailor(remembered the previous incident),filled his trunk with muddy water and sprayed all over the place in tailors shop.(ofcourse, there are lot of fallacies in this story but as kids this was very fascinating to us)

4. plunketear (1224) | 9 months ago | Ya it is. I sorta got a kick out of the lack of warm and fuzzy at the end for a change, James.
For those of us who welcome the unexpected, I wonder if it stems from one too many slushy mushy chain email stories?

those chain letters usually have stick-like-glue bugs, cookies, spyware and at the very least, email address sharing crapware attached to them. I avoid them like the plaque. My friends think I'm getting old and stuffy and grumpy. Yet, guess who they ask for help if they have a new PC glitch, that they didn't have last week? Ah well, where's the violin, I gotta broken record to make..

7. p1kef1sh (5630) | 9 months ago | Several years ago, whilst working as an elephant keeper at London Zoo we had a most distressing occurrence. A young man climbed into the enclosure and walked up to one of the elephants. The elephant was clearly distressed by this and retreated back into the elephant house. Using superelephant powers he managed to call his agent and discovered that the intruder was indeed the man that had been circulating a story around the world in which he claimed to have removed a piece of wood from the elephant's foot. The agent explained that he had many times tried to get royalties from the man, but to no avail. He said that perhaps the elephant might have more luck by using a more direct approach. Elephants are not known for their subtle powers of persuasion.........

James72 (6963) | 9 months ago | I KNEW there'd be an alternative side to all of this! As per usual there's always three sides to the story. The man's recollection, the elephants perspective; and the TRUTH. Damn elephants and their convoluted methods. They can't even JUMP! Can you believe that??? Never trust an animal that can't jump. As for the man, well he's probably sitting pretty on the money earned from selling the story for all these years and I bet he's flogged the movie rights too. It's a shame Marlon Brando's passed on as he could've played the elephant. (He did beef up in his later years!)

Rover says "come near me with those gnashers and it's more than jumping you'll do". That darn dog thinks he owns the place. [No you don't. Don't Don't Don't Don't.... Ok. But I'm not sleepng in that basket again]

10. craftcatcher (2277) | 9 months ago | Elephants are one of my favorite creatures on Earth. We don't give them nearly enough credit for their intelligence, creativity, emotions or family values. That story was pretty funny! If true he's lucky to be alive
I have a neat elephant story to share, 100% true. There is a zoo not too far from where I live. About a 20 minute drive. I've been a regular visitor since I can ever remember and I'm sure it's one of the reasons I love animals so very much. The zoo received a very young female elephant back in 1965 and after an area-wide and extremely well publicized name-the-elephant contest her official name became Kathy Sh-boom. Kathy was so loved in this area and I saw her so often she became like a friend I only got to see a couple of times a year. We always took peanuts or fruit to feed her and I always took time to just stand there and talk to her. She loved all that attention.
A couple of years ago, on an extremely hot and humid Saturday, hubby and I were miserable and bored and looking for something to do. So we decided to go out to the zoo. The very first habitat you come to on the trail belongs to the elephants. I was so eager to see Kathy because we hadn't been to the zoo in several years. We get up to the habitat and no one else was around, it was just me, hubby and Kathy. Kathy walked over near us and we started talking to her. She stuck her trunk out to us just like a child asking for a piece of candy. We didn't bring anything to her.. zoos frown on that now of course.. so I talked to Kathy and apologized to her for not having a treat. I showed her my empty hands and told her I wish I could give her something but not this visit. Kathy looked at my empty hands and got very upset. She trumpeted at me (not at hubby because he didn't show his empty hands), walked over to her pool, picked up a very large tree branch, walked back over to were we were standing and proceed to throw the branch right at me! Thank goodness there were bars there because she had perfect aim. She whipped that branch so hard that if it hadn't hit the bars it would have taken my head off! That elephant was really ticked off at me!
Hubby and I both stood there just stunned! What a temper tantrum! After she threw the branch she shook her head, trumpeted again then turned her tail end to us and refused to turn back around. We couldn't help but laugh hysterically. It's a story we tell to this day and still laugh just as hard about it. Sadly Kathy died from a viral infection about 6 months later at age 42. We were heartbroken but our last visit with her sure was memorable and always brings a smile to our faces.
