I sure hope a lot of people voice their protest about this since this is beyond stupid and could have detrimental effects to not only the soil, water but to people. Some genius decided that in order to stop the illegal immigrants coming over the border into the USA, that the US Border Patrol plans to spray chemical herbicide in order to eradicate stands of the Carrizo Cane, an invasive plant that grows as tall as 30 feet and provides Convenient cover for undocumented border crossers and smugglers. Possibly beginning next week, the US Border Patrol could commence aerial herbicide spraying along a slice of the Rio Grande between the twin cities of Laredo, Texas, and Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas. The experimental spraying would cover an area that stretches 1.1 miles between the Laredo Railroad Bridge and Laredo Community College directly across from Mexico, said Roque Sarinana, public affairs officer for the Border Patrol’s Laredo sector. In addition to aerial spraying of the herbicide imazapyr, the Border Patrol will employ hand-cutting and mechanical methods that involve applying the killer chemical at ground-level, Sarinana told Frontera NorteSur in an a phone interview. Getting rid of Carrizo cane should improve the Border Patrol’s “line of sight up and down the river, ” Sarinana said. Depending on weather conditions, the first dustings of imazapyr could begin March 25, Sarinana confirmed. “As of now, that’s the plan,” he said. http://censored-news.blogspot.com/2009/03/borders-agent-orange-controversy.html {Warning: NOT a referral link but link to the article} There are several articles related to this one and all basically say the same thing I further read a PDF file on the chemical Imazapy itself. The effects of the herbicide have only been tested on animals..but here are some facts from the PDF file one can download Adverse effects found in laboratory animals after chronic exposure to imazapyr include the following: fluid accumulation in the lungs of female mice, kidney cysts in male mice, abnormal blood formation in the spleen of female rats, an increase in the number of brain and thyroid cancers in male rats, and an increase in the number of tumors and cancers of the adrenal gland in female rats. Imazapyr can persist in soil for over a year. Persistence studies suggest that imazapyr residues damage plants at concentrations that are not detectable by laboratory analysis. Imazapyr moves readily in soil. It has contaminated surface and ground water following aerial and ground forestry applications. Not only would this chemical eradicate the foliage that the US Border Patrol hopes to eliminate, but will pollute the soil, air and water and could affect animal life in which there are about 1,000 known species and three on the endangered list. WORSE: This spaying of this toxic chemical CAN AND WILL AFFECT PEOPLE ON BOTH SIDES OF THE BORDER I MIGHT ADD as it will also escape into the air. EXCUSE ME!!!! Does anyone find this stupidity in the making? Now our government wants to poison us? Look what Agent Orange did not only to the people of Vietnam, but to our own veterans who came into contact with it. I know many out their may not have sympathy for illegals...but this will affect OUR people too The planned aerial spraying is to begin March 25th. Here's another link to an article in which gives a link where one can write to the US Attorney General Eric Holder so one can voice their opinion about this http://www.allvoices.com/contributed-news/2755552-breaking-news-us-feds-to-defoliate-rio-grande-river-bank

The farmers have been doing it for decades... What's the difference with this? Even if they do it at ground level with a tractor... and the wind blows in the wrong direction... a fine spray gets all over the town or village. Where I live... they spray the vineyards at night so that no-one will see it.

The thing is catla1 there are so many more environmentally friendly herbicides to use..can't help thinking the company making this chemical is pushing this. Did you know the people of Vietnam are still trying to sue the maker of Agent Orange for what it did to their people even after some 40 years afterwards? Look at this youtube video....it's longish...but it's all about how Agent Orange affected people http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GJxb7CY13uc {NOT a referral link but a link to a youtube video} The difference Aussie is that this chemical is as lethal as Agent Orange...it's one of the most toxic herbicides going

This isn't only going to affect the illegals but Americans as well as the spraying will also occur on US land not just Mexico

lol Tamara has a good idea but they already do some of that. WE could take away the benifits that we give them and maybe that would stop the flow of poeple coming here. also our factories are going there so why arent they staying home!

I am against any product that is toxic to our environment. Ho did this ever get past the EPA if it is so dangerous?

If you want to hear something really ironic...our wonderful EPA thinks this chemical is safe to use...sure..I trust the EPA standards just like I trust the FDA....NOT Many of our produce foods are grown in countries where many pesticides have long been banned in our country yet still used in their countries yet we're still accepting these foods into our country contaminated with these banned pesticides...gee, wonder why so many of us get health issues...as for the FDA...they don't report "problems" with food or medications until a few people die from them...nice huh?

isn't the jaurez river near the border? that's not a good idea at all.the poison will probably go right in it and travel. they'd be better off planting a field of ocotillo plants. if they're willing to crawl through that, hell, let 'em in. once the bleeding stops, that is.

world's best natural fence.they can grow over 8 ft tall, and have long thorns going up the entire length of it.like i said,if they brave that..let 'em in.they deserve it. not too many people will try it.

Killing them by toxic spraying isn't right, either. I don't appreciate illegals here, but I don't think they deserve to be sprayed with harsh chemicals. I don't know what a good solution would be. I agree that the aerial spraying falls into the category of STUPIDITY.

Hi pye, I can not understand what the goverment is up to, surely they must know the dangers of this spray, why can't they just stand at the borders and shoot the illegals down like dogs then? at least it would be quick instead for long suffering and then die. If they do their jobs properley they wouldn't have to resort to dangerious sprays, I am speechless. Bright Blessings. Tamara xxxx

You probably know my point of view. This is not going the right direction. Poison is poison and will affect the river and people on both sites of the river. Securing the border needs the new ideas, but not by spraying more toxins into our environment.

Thanks for the link, pye. I'll definitely be one writing my opinion about this! It seems that our government does what it wants without ever asking the public (especially those who will be affected by whatever it is the government is planning to do). Not only would this be disastrous for the people living near this proposed spraying area, but the government will be using our tax dollars to do it with! Things like this really make me see red! So many of our tax dollars are spent by our government to do things that we'd like to see not happen but it usually does no good to protest; our government does what it feels like. I can understand their reasoning for this, but I do not agree with it and have the same opinion as you about it. There's only one thing that I can see that is better for us than it was for our parents: We learn about these things faster because of the internet and can at least TRY to stop them! I don't believe in chemical sprays of any kind, and I'm growing fruit trees! I refuse to use chemicals on them. I would propose putting those illegal immigrants to work, cutting down these plants on their way BACK to Mexico! Use prisoners like they did 60-70 years ago, the old "chain gangs" to cut these things down... chemical spraying is NOT necessary!!! I hope that, if this is not stopped and people begin to get sick from it, that they sue the government for every penny they can!

A friend of mine here at MyLot told me about this cause I sure haven't heard anything on the regular news media about it, so quite obviously our government is "hushing" it up and doesn't want the public to know about it--yes, thank goodness for the internet as one can find info that might be "hidden" from us otherwise

You bring up agent orange, which was the first thing that came to my mind. It took the American government over 30 years to admit that contact with agent orange causes cancer and birth defects. I have a friend who is another Vietnam veteran that now has diabetes and several other problems that the VA now admits is caused by the chemical. Now our wonderful government plans to poison the ground and groundwater for at least 50 years with this folly.

Yeah our government was in big denial that agent orange caused any harm, they'll probably do the same with this chemical as well

Did the United States not learn anything about Agent Orange in Vietnam where they sprayed a supposedly safe chemical over millions of acres to prevent the Viet Cong from moving under cover of the forest.

Nope doesn't seem like our government learned anything from the Agent Orange disaster...look how many years it denied it had any effects on our soldiers that fought in Vietnam

Thank you Pye for bring forward another one of our government's "terrific" ideas. My idea? I say form chain gangs again and let the people serving prison terms cut all the stuff down. Then all the wood and/or left overs can be broke down and chipped for mulch. Would this take forever? Probably. I know farmers spray their crops, but it's regulated. Note, not all the farm chemicals in the market are "green". Those kinds of chemicals or alternatives are mostly found in organic farmer which doesn't have a big hold in a lot of farming communities. We're talking our government here and you can't convince me they give half a rats asre to the long term effects of anything. Sorry, that's just the way I see it.

It does make you wonder at times just how safe the herbicides/pesticides are that ARE regulated and used to spray on our food crops--those that aren't organic farmers that is

People on both sides of the border need to be thought of... as well as anyone who is down river of that water and where it travels. Do people not learn from the past? Why must it repeat itself?

All I can say is...YIKES. So gee, our government has been making its citizens human guinea pigs since 1900, how wonderful It took me awhile to find it but I was glad I was able to confirm something that I thought was just a rumor...that being that in 1966 (hadn't known the year) where a toxic chemical was released by the US Army in the NYC subway system

My understanding is that even microscopic amounts of certain chemicals can compromise the immune system. Now if we are talking about spraying tons of this stuff, it would be fair to say that is an enourmous amount of compromising. This is also a fact, that counts, how many gallons? You see the amount that will actualy be sprayed, is unspecified? The long terms affects of many of these chemicals are disabling diseases and freak immune diseases. There is no reason why they cant just cut it down. There is enough high powered equipment to take it down without risking any chemical poisoning. It may mean more work but an awful lot safer. I dont think there is any poison strong enough to kill brush like this, that is safe for water, people and the environment. They get weirder everyday and less and less makes sense.

It's frightening to know that these people even considered this to be a good idea, pyewacket. Only serves to prove how little respect they have for human life, if you ask me. We like to think that we live in a democracy where we are cared for and treated with respect, but history teaches us that it just isn't so. Our government has experimented on its citizens in the past(without their prior knowledge), and my belief is that they consider any loss of life or detrimental effects from their poor choices to simply be deemed acceptable casualties. There are other methods that can and should be used to control the borders, but they have repeatedly turned a deaf ear to those suggestions.

Yes, I only just came across a website that lists year by year how citizens of the US have been unknowingly experimented on and it goes back to 1900! One thing that website mentioned was how in 1966 a toxic chemical was released in the subway system in 1966 here in NYC...I had heard of that but only thought it was a rumor until now.

Hi pyewacket! Oh my that is really horrible! This is another classic example of intelligent people who lack common sense and compassion. Oh I think they lack any human feelings at all except to be ahead of the game. I do understand your country's problem of illegal immigrants but to use a dangerous chemical spray on the land and possibly on people on the run is cruel and horrible. I can't help but think that your government is using biological warfare to eradicate and intimidate illegal immigrants. Just my thoughts. God Bless..Take care always! lovelots..faith
