How to decline this kind of kindness?

I have two twin sons. My wife and I try to prevent our sons from taking too much sugar. So we seldom give sweets to eat for their health. As we know, too much sugar consumption is not only bad for their teeth, but also for their intelligence. Sometimes when we take our children for a talk in the neighbourhood and meet some acquaintances, they will show their favor to our children by showing and giving some sweets to them. My sons love sweets very much. If they see the sweets, they will cry for them. They are now too young to listen to our explanation. We feel very embarrassed at this situation. After all, my neighbours are showing their kindness and we can't easily refuse. So could you please tell me how to decline the kindness of my neighbours?

Well, If that is important to you that your kids do not give sweets to them just politly ask them hey instead of sweets could you pick somthing like grapes? or somthing like a popcicle or even sugar free candy will. they do have them. OR you can not say anything at all and just make your kids wait till later to eat the candy.and then when it does some time prasuede them to choose somthing else by saying. do you want the candy or this? and just pick somthing that you know theyw ill like much better:)

Thank you for your response! Your suggestion may help. It is really hard to directly say "no" to those kind neighbours. That's also impolite. So sometimes we always accept the sweets first and try to take them away from our sons when the neighbours leave. But usually my sons are very eager to eat the sweets. They will eat the sweets as soon as they receive the sweets. We have no time to consider other substitutes for them to eat and just take the sweets away from them? A tough job! Anyway, thank you very much!

Hi,
Though once in a while sweets for children will not do that harm, yet it is better to put a straight condition with Ur neighbours-"we'll visit provided sweets are not offered for children..."=Lahiri,Kolkata,India.
