I would hope that when you say "young children" the parents would be supervising the receipt of any cash. To a young child, a $1 and a $20 are the same thing. They don't know the difference. If you ask them what they're going to spend it on, it might be candy or a trip to the Moon, because young children don't know the value of money. They learn what money is very young, but value is a difficult concept until they get considerably older. You can give the child any amount you'd like as long as you know the parents are going to be controlling it, either by helping the child buy something they really want or by putting it in a bank and saving it. With older children, once you give it to them it's theirs to spend.

I think that $2-$5 should be a significant enough amount to give a child and yes they should always be asked what they purchased with the money. It is always good to know what your kids are buying.

Wow this is an old discussion..lol.. I think it is great to gift them a gift and a gift of money as well so that they can get things they may like as well.. Or save it up. It also depends on the children's age as well the older they are the more they might be responsible enough not o lose it or waste on candy.

It depends on the age. I start off by giving coins to my kids. I never pamper them with money but other members of my family normally spoil my children by given them money as and when they meet my kids. I will ask my kids in detail what they buy with the money that I have given them. This is to teach them accountability. [em]thumbup[/em
