Valentine is Frank's dog and he is 15 years old I am told, he is completely retired and I am hoping to adopt a dog for me from the Animal Shelter, I want a medium dog, and a dog I can go on walks with. I am wondering what will be the best dog that will get along with Valentine? I am thinking mutt is a best choice but from there on I have no clue. Advice anyone?

Well first I would think of the temperment that Valentine has and think what would be best for him do you want a younger dog with energy that might bounce around and annoy the older dog or do you want a dog that is a couple of yrs old that has the edge already taken off of him so that he's not bouncing all over the place. Do you want a dog that is going to require alot attention and grooming .. I mean I could go on and on. The best bet is go to a shelter and pick out a couple of prospective fits and then bring in valentine and see how the two do becuase you don't want to bring home a dog that isn't going to fit with all aspects of you life , it will just frustrate you to no end to have a bad fit.

Thanks for the advice, right now I will have to think of Valentines personality and see how it works out at the end. I am not sure we can take Valentine to the shelter. Thanks tho, and I agree with you, they both need to get along. I feel that a puppy will be a better match as he can get used to Valentine.

you might feel that a puppy would be a better match but just think of all the energy a puppy has and he might get on the older dogs nerves. The dog might tolerate puppys well in short doses. I know that most shelters if you get from them and you have another dog require that you bring the dog in so they can see how the dogs interact because they don't want you to adopt and then take the adopted dog home and find out the other dog doesn't like him or there are fight and you have surrender the adopted dog and then they are in the position all over again of finding that dog a perspective home. Any dog that you have should always meet and greet the perspective new dog.. This will cut down on saying ok this one is not going to work..

I think Valentine would pretty much get along with any dog, unless it is way too hyper or it constantly tried to take away his food. He used to have a smaller dog playmate and they got along okay. Val got along okay with Brownie too, once they got past the sniffing of the rear ends and the initial growl at one another I think you should just get a dog that you like and we can deal with any behavior problems once the two dogs are together
