Should people work if they don't financially need to work? email this discussion to a friend?

I have always felt that they should NOT work if they do not have a financial need to work. I have felt this way even before the economy was bad but I feel even stronger about this now. You are taking opportunity for someone else to have that job. You are literally taking food out of someone else's mouth. I know that is not going to be a popular opinion to some people but maybe now that times are so bad more people will agree with me. If you are bored and need something to do go volunteer somewhere but don't take a job that someone who has a family to support and actually NEEDS the money to feed his kids or pay for a roof over his head. What does everyone else think? Unless you are out there creating a job for someone else by what you are doing then I personally think it is just selfish.

I think that it is not selfish to work. It is right, and it's biblical to work hard and provide for the needs of the family. There are billionaires who doesn't need to work but they do because they want to maintain what they have, and in the process, help other people. Some people work because they want to do something, the reward or wages, or salaries are just an added bonus, though they are financially secured!lol

Ah, the famous "Protestant ethic." If only all the millionaires and billionaires in the world actually did help people. Some of them do, but I really don't think it's the norm.

Ok what I am saying here then is that this person has provided for their family then and no longer needs to work in order to do so any longer. If they have all of this money and need to do something then bibilically I would feel it was their responsibility then to be a leader and provider jobs for other less fortunate then them. If that was the case fine, but they certainly would not be working at a job taking food out of other mouths.

It's up to them. They have the right to choose whether they still want to work or not. It's not their fault that the economy's bad or if other people are finding hard to have a job. Yes, a lot of financially independent people are really creating jobs for someone else, but they still have the right to just work if they want to.=)

I am willing to go out on a limb and agree with you completely. I think that people who actually need jobs in order to live should be given priority over people who already have all the money they need to live (like people who got a huge inheritance or something like that). Ideally, I think everyone should be able to have a satisfying, useful job to provide for themselves and occupy their time; however, in this world, that dream is simply not a reality. There are not as many jobs as there are people, and I think that it would provide more jobs for those who need them if those who don't need them step back.
