Grass seed for this spring

Spring time is already here. After several days of raining, finally, I hear the cricket chirping again at the night time. In my front yard, there is many wild weed growing. My father advised me to mow the front yard, and sow some grass seed; then add the fertilizer. After 4 days, I don't see any of it effective, the weed keep grew back. I just wonder what is the best grass seed and fertilizer for this season?
