Will the Banner Impressions effective in its funtion?

I came across the word "Banner Impression", a method of advertisement mainly in PTR sites and don't have much idea about that. What exactly is this? How advertisements are displayed here? What is the difference between our normal ads that we are placing in the PTC sites and this banner ads? How can we count the number of impressions we received on our banner?
