doot do doo looking out my back door!

snow on the mountain - It snowed last night on top of the mountain. You can see in this photo that the snow is only on the top of the mountain and doesn't extend into the valley.

When I got up this morning it was cold. We got the kids up to get them ready for school and my sil said it was snowing. Sure enough there were snow flurries flying around outside. So I decided that I would start the truck up before the kids had to come get in it to let the heater warm it up a little. When I stated out my door my neighbor was out in the road looking at the mountain. When I looked I was pretty sure there wouldn't be school that day. Sure enough, I was right. Where we live in the valley, we rarely get more than a few flurries, but if it snows any at all on the mountain top they will close the schools in three counties. I guess they are scared to send the busses up there and don't want to have school with only part of the students in attendance. I wonder how some of the families where both parents work handle the days the schools close. I bet one of them has to stay home and not go to work that day. In our family we have three adults so it is not a problem. But I have always been one to see the other side of any situation. Anyway I thought this picture of the mountain was cool.

Flurries??? What IS this madness?? That's an amazing picture you've shared and I'd love to experience something like it one day. I've always loathed the cold, but still! It must be great living in a valley and only getting the least of it as it's not far to get to if you're in the mood for it and it isn't in your face if you're not. Sounds ideal!

That's how I like it here too James. I can see it on the tops of the mountains from my window whenever I want from November until June but outside here the sun is shining - the best of both worlds indeed!

I had never thought about it quite like that. I guess I do have the better part of two worlds. I did have occasion to go up the mountain one day while it was snowing up there. It really was beautiful. And believe it or not it really isn't all that cold while it's snowing. It does get mighty cold after it stops.

We home school our kids so that's something we don't have to worry about. Sounds like you've got it under control.

I never had faith, we've taken out God, introduced other forms of entertainment. I'll teach my kids what they need to know not what the schools "want" them to know. Its all about retention anyway, garbage in, garbage out.

There is a lot of that going on. I home schooled mine after they finished grade school. I wasn't confident enough of my ability to teach them to read but once they mastered that I knew I could teach them everything else. Do you think that as a nation we are losing faith in the school system?

we actually got about an inch over night last night which made for interesting driving this morning. its not the light fluffy snow of winter, but more of a icy/slushy snow. it will be gone by the weekend as it is supposed to warm up. we have a teenager and a 12 year old and we usually leave them home if hubby and i have to go to work (like easter monday for instance) lucky them, they will have the day off!

Yes I was always left home alone, too, when there was no school because both my parents had three farms to tend the stock on. Of course it was a different time then. Now you cannot safely leave young children on their own. It is good that yours are old enough and responsible enough to take care of themselves while you work.

Bbbrrrrrrrrrr savak! It's supposed to be spring not winter! When it snows in the mountains here the buses have snow chains mounted and they manage to get the kids to school just the same. Do they not use them there?

That's what I said. When we moved into this house we decided that we would not worry about whether the furnace was usable or not or get gas installed to run it. The cost was too high and we figured that winter was almost over anyway. We did get a couple of used Kerosene heaters to tide us over till summer but this is getting ridiculous. I don't think they know what chains are here. We don't really get that much snow, even on the mountain tops. We've only lost about 8 days all year to snow.
