Oh yeah.........I have even embarrassed my girlfriend by stopping on the side of the road to pick up a television someone had set out for the garbage man to get. It was a fairly large screen tv and she wasn't laughing when I replaced the fuse and it worked fine.
I used to get a lot of window air conditioners like that too. If they wouldn't cool like they were supposed to some people would just get a new one when all it needed was to be cleaned. If I couldn't fix it I could always sell it for scrap.
You have to understand I'm a sub-contractor and I'm always on the road in my truck so it's easy to see things and pick them up.

We moved from an area in Indiana that had spring cleaning days for the trash. You could put out anything except tires for the trash to pick up. The fun part though was driving all over town each day during spring cleaning days which was generally done for two weeks, and seeing what sort of treasures you could find! It was a lot of fun too, not just in getting to drive around and go through everyones used goods, but also being able to put things out you no longer use, and know that someone in need is going to find it and put it to good use, or make a little cash on it to help make ends meet.
Congrats on your great find!

We certainly don't take things out of trash bags, but if someone leaves a chair, or an appliance or something out that we may be able to use, we have no problems picking it up. I found a brand new computer monitor for my husband, that way. it was a great monitor, and he works perfectly.
