What do you think about the news showing the first dog?  email this discussion to a friend?

I thought those were cute news, and I wanted to learn more about the tradition of letting us know what the first family will chose as a pet.
I found this:
Although they've never appeared on any ticket, presidential pets have often been the most popular White House residents. Nearly 400 pets have called 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. home, including many that were stabled there in the early days of the presidency.

The presidential love affair with animals dates back to George Washington, who was devoted to his horse, Nelson. John Quincy Adams kept an alligator on the grounds, and Thomas Jefferson's administration welcomed a pet bear.

The Lincoln White House was a menagerie of rabbits, turkeys, horses and goats. But Theodore Roosevelt wins the prize for pet variety, hosting more animals than any other president before or since. Roosevelt and his six children shared a deep affection for animals, and their collection included dogs, bears, lizards, guinea pigs, a badger, a blue macaw, chickens, a barn owl, rabbits, a pony and a pig named Maude.

Many presidential pets were gifts from visiting dignitaries. Such was the case with Rebecca, a raccoon, presented to Calvin Coolidge, who built a special home for her and walked her by leash on the White House grounds.

With the advent of more popular media, the role White House pets have played in presidential lives as well as in history has become more apparent. Fala, Franklin Roosevelt's Scottish terrier, is remembered for being present when Winston Churchill and the president signed the Atlantic Charter in 1941 aboard the USS Augusta. Fala was also the subject of the first presidential pet biography, a tradition continued by first lady Barbara Bush in her book about the Bush's springer spaniel, Millie, and Hillary Clinton in her book about Socks the cat and Buddy, the president's chocolate Labrador retriever.

As children, folks in my generation became familiar with the many pets in the Kennedy household. We remember Macaroni the pony, a gift to Caroline from Vice President Lyndon Johnson. Macaroni shared the spotlight with a host of dogs, rabbit and guinea pigs.*note from me* I found out that Macaroni got many letters from children.

Political pets also have been used as political ploys. Herbert Hoover opened his home to a German shepherd named King Tut on the suggestion of an adviser who thought the dog would enhance Hoover's image with the public. And when Lyndon Johnson was photographed holding his dogs by the ears, the Republican leadership in Congress seized on it and predicted it would irreparably damage Johnson's political career.

Not only do presidential pets serve to humanize their owners to the general public, but according to some reports, they have played a major role in reducing stress and serving as listening posts for the commander in chief in challenging times.

That's the great thing about animals. They don't care about our politics or whether we can balance the budget.

As they have sat at presidential feet in the Oval Office or on presidential laps in the White House living quarters, just imagine the history they have heard!

So what do you think?
Is the first pet news worthy?
Should the first family adopted vs receiving a pet from a friend?
Do you care about this tradition?

Hey Shelly! Nice piece for a discussion! I loved watching
the Obamas with "BO" yesterday on the news! He is so adorable!
Looks like he might be a bit of a handful! I think it is
news worthy as was many of the other Presidential pets! I
thought Socks (RIP) and Buddy and many of the other Presidential
Pets were too! After all, if they could speak think of all the
secrets they could tell! I didn't read Barbara Bush's book on
Millie, but I'm sure it was great reading! Just seeing the fun
the Obamas were having was well worth it! I do think they are
having some trouble in the control department! I think BO is
controlling them right now! I do think the Presidentital Pets
are a wonderful tradition and if anyone doesn't like or understand
it that's too bad! If it gives the President and his family some
stress reduction then I am all for it! Besides, I am an avid animal
lover anyway~

I like the news too,
I found this article where it said that John Kennedy had a horse named macaroni and children sent him letters, I thought it was cute.
I know a pet can good for reducing stress, and a dog it is also a pet that can ground you in the now.
I did not know Socks is in kitty heaven now.
I read that the Dog Whisperer told them that Obama needed to be the leader with his puppy, so he is thinking the same way as you are.
(I am trying my best of Marley not to be the Alpha in here, with Valentine and all)

ok here I go and I know I'm going to be burned at the stake but well I don't really care.

So what do you think?

I think it's great that the president made a promise to his daughters and kept said promise. Animals/pets are great for stress reducers and are a great way for kids to learn responsiblility.

Is the first pet news worthy?

No to me it's not. What pet the president decides to have in the white house does not change how he runs the country or how he acts as a president. So to me what he gets is his own preference for his family and is not news worthy material... Nor should it be because now think of how many people are going to run out to buy a dog like the president and then when they can't afford up keep or vet bills or even if they end up not liking the breed, then what happends the poor pooch ends up in a shelter and then the dog loses. If he get a pet and they want to publicise then fine say he got a dog or a cat or a what not don't make a huge debute over it. It's not important what is important is what he does in his office and if he does what he promised nothing more nothing less.

Should the first family adopted vs receiving a pet from a friend?

It doesn't matter whether they adopt a pet or recieve from a friend .. What matters is that the pet is the perfect fit for the family. My other half just said something when I was talking to him about this discussion that they had to have a pet that fit with the presidents daughters allergies. So not all the time is adopting going to work. You have to look at the whole picture and not a part of the picture before that descission is made.

Do you care about this tradition?

Nope, not really .. What matters to me is that the country is being run correctly and that the president makes sure that we are safe. So to me it's not newsworthy..

First of all I respect your answers and opinions.
I agree that adopting a dog is not an important issue on the presidency of Obama.
I myself did enjoy the news, it was refreshing to me among the bad economic news, murder trials of children, war and violence.
(plus my mind is on puppies having gotten one myself from the animal shelter)
I ask the adoption from a shelter vs getting a pet from a friend as I read people saying that Obama would have set a trend by getting a dog from a shelter, and so far, you are one of the few persons that writes about the needs of his daughters. I myself think is good both ways, I am glad we got Marley from the animal shelter but if in the future a friend gives me a dog, I will take it with open arms.
Thanks for taking the time to answer and being honest.
(I think I am in the minority as most people did not find the first family dog newsworthy but such is life wink )
