well my dog did great through the surgery! so yay! but now i am thrown into the nightmare of trying to keep her from hurting herself afterwards.. my dog had the same problem when she got fixed.. whatever pain pills they gave her made her feel NO pain (Which is good) but also made her hyper to where she was running and jumping and acting crazy! i was scared to death her stitches would come loose and something awful would happen! shes 87 lbs and so i cannot keep her from doing what she wants so ugh! well this time i figure she is older maybe it will be different.. i even talk to the vet and the lady thought i was CRAZY about how i was telling her my dog was hyper active after the pills.. well then a few minutes later she was telling my dog to stop dragging her up the vet stairs and i knew i was SCREWED! yep these pills make her feel nothing and i have caught her jumping and etc and dont know what to do! she is sleeping more on these pills but when she is awake she is doing everything she shouldnt.. sigh! shes not pulling at the stiches so its not like the collar would help.. the only thing that may keep her still would be to hog tie her! (kidding of course)
how do you keep a hyper dog that feels no pain after surgery from going hog wild? especially if she is bigger than you?! lol.. when we had her fixed i had to take her off the meds early so she would feel something and realized that running around like a wild animal was a BAD thing but of course its way too early to even think about taking her off the meds for this last surgery.. ugh.. any suggestions?

what I would do is buy a crate and crate her. or get an area in you home where you can keep the dog safely confined but has room to move around. I'm sorry but those are the only suggestion I have I haven't had to deal with surgery yet and I'm going to have to soon so I'm thinking about what I'm going to do and I know I'm going to talk to my vet about it.

i have a big cage but she would just pitch a fit and try to break out and prob hurt herself in the process and drive me nuts.. i figured out how to at least keep her still.. i made some steps up to the bed and if she is in the bed she will sleep and not move around.. i dont like that she is getting up here but at least now there are steps so its not her fully jumping.. i cant gate off a room because she will jump the fence
shes stubborn and if she wants something she will do it

I hate to say it most dogs are stubborn and decide that they will do what they want when they want LOL!!! I wish you luck with her though.

The vets all say to cage them. Personally, I don't have the heart to cage an animal. They look so sad and pathetic when they're caged, although I did have to cage a kitten we had that somehow managed to break two of her legs (jumping from something high, I suspect... we didn't see it happen). She had these tiny little casts on her legs and learned to run all over the place with them on. She trid to jump up on the furniture but always ended up falling again so I had to put her in a cage.
We took her out as often as we could and played with her on the floor or held her as long as she was content with that, but would have to put her right back into the cage afterwards, until the bones had healed, anyway.
The only thing I can suggest is that you spend as much time as you can with your dog, petting her, brushing her, whatever she likes that will hold her still. Other than that, I couldn't say, because I know the vet would say to cage her. (That's their "generic" answer for a lot of pet problems.)
I noticed my little girl feeling a lot better a day or two after her surgery (she was spayed and had a hernia repaired) and didn't need pain meds, so maybe you could cut back on the amount earlier than what you were told. She moved around rather gingerly for awhile but was pretty much back to normal in two or three days. Dogs heal fast! I wish we healed that fast!
Good luck. I'm so happy to hear that she came through it okay! I had a 12-year-old gal who needed surgery a long time ago and the vet said she had a 50/50 chance of making it through the surgery. She came through with flying colors. I think they're a lot more resilient than anyone gives them credit for.

I would concider finging a crate tp put in your house. that way when she does get like that you can put her in it to let her know right now that behavior is unacceptable... And if shes that hyper as you say she is she will defiantly not like going in that cage so mabey shell calm dow after being in the cage a few times...

then i will have to worry about her licking the wound.. and she will just rattle and try to break her way out which with my luck would pull something
