Which fictional detective you like?

I like them all. Read and re-read so many times. Love the fact that he lost to a lady (the one who married the lawyer and ran away)
Love his reasoning skills. The only thing I hate about him is his smoking habit. Wonder how long a person who smokes like that can live.

You can save your money. All the detective novels of Sherlock Holmes are available for free download. The author wrote Sherlock Holmes more than a hundred years ago, the books are no longer copyrighted.
You can even see the original graphics in The Strand magazines if you do a google search.
It's worth your time to read through the books. The English standard is much higher than Nancy Drew or Hardy Boys.

Agatha's novels are as good as Arthur Doyle's. The style is different because it is more modern. I don't know is because I started with Agatha Christie first or what. I always like her works better Doyle's. I feel more realistic reading her novels. Doyle's are more entertaining with the well known Sherlock Holmes.

A lot of modern detective works are from Japan. The plot is even more detail. If you come across an English version one, you can try reading it.

Aside to Mini, Both writers were completely different in the style of writing. And yes, both lived years apart, the England they featured in the stories were completely different. Sherlock Holmes focus more on cold logical and reasoning power.
Agatha Christie had a talent in protraying those young ladies who were so independent, brave and funny.
I like certain detective stories by Japanese writers. Usually read them in Chinese. There are a lot of collection in the public libraries here.

Too bad Sherlock Holmes was not allowed to die, the author was forced to resurrect him.
I do enjoy Hercules Poirot and Miss Maple, more of Hercules Poirot than Miss Maple. Miss Maples tends to beat round the bush in her speech, then a sudden twist at the end of the story.

Beside the Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys, there were still a few series, like the Three Investigators and Trixie something.
Wonder how the books are selling now. The Three Investigators are interesting too, hope they continue publishing.

John Rebus is new to me. Can't recall much about Archy McNally. I only read one of the book featuring Archy McNally years ago. Guess I better borrow a few more of Lawrence Sanders and Ian Rankin books.
Are you reading Henninh Mankell and Ngaio Marsh? I forgotten the names of the detectives, but both are very good detective writers.
There is one lesser known writer, Donald Harstad. He writes from his years of experience in small town. His books are refreshing and the small town characteristics are prominently featured. Like there is no usual murder investigation method, since small town only has 1 murder in about 4 years.

Hi, John Rebus is one of those morose yet endearing detectives, and Archy McNally is the charming playboy. I've read Ngaio Marsh; her protagonist is Roderick Alleyn - very good as well.
I've yet to read Henninh Mankell and Donald Harstald - will look out for them!

I read Issac Asimov quite some time ago. It's very interesting, love to follow the exploration and anticipating the problems coming up. Just can't recall the names of any characters.
It's funny that most of the time I remember the authors and not the characters, except Sherlock Holmes. Probably the library books are coded according to author names.

Many Japanese detective stories are very unique, the investigative methods are very different.
And the Japanese cultures vary depends on the author.
There are a lot of Japanese Detective stories (translated into Chinese) in the public libraries. Some are more funny, but majority are more like horror stories.
