The connection I saw between Eternal Sunshine and 50 First Dates? email this discussion to a friend?

I loved this movie, Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless mind, even today, since it first came out, i cannot seem to get enough of watching it over and over. The question raised on this plot is basically the theory that not only our brain has a memory, but so does our heart. well, not really our heart. our emotions and thoughts all come from our head. so i guess i answered my own question huh:/ no, really, if part of our thoughts are erased, specific parts of our memory is taken out. is it true that our emotion will never forget that what we feel for this particular person will always be the same. and we never forget? i think the same goes for the movie 50 first dates. it tackles the theory about someone losing their memory and yet managed to recall someone out of genuine love. it is a very romantic idea. and i absolutely adored it because no matter how i look at it, i see no loopholes in the story. even though the idea of erasing someone's memory is too ambitious to even think it's at all possible. but what about you? did you like these films?

Really interesting link.
I'd have put 50 first dates in a different category of film as it's a blockbusting romcom while Eternal... is a cult indie film, but your idea goes to show that deep thoughts can appear in all kinds of film.
I struggled with 50... and only saw it because of Drew. The extras say that they could have made it a heavier drama - it is based on a true story, I think - but chose to lighten it. That felt quite celebratory. I struggled with much of the humour.
Eternal... is one of my favourite films. I see new things in it when I rewatch it, such as the idea that we contruct a mental life around people. An earlier script had the charcters as older people, looking back over their lives. I'm not sure I miss that from the film.
