What do you think of the Grateful Dead without Jerry Garcia?  email this discussion to a friend?

KidKarma (30) 3 years ago

The Grateful Dead are playing near my town this weekend. I've been a Dead fan for years now but I'm not sure how I feel about the Dead without Jerry. I still think it would be an amazing experience to go regardless, but my husband thinks that it would be a waste of time and money since there is is no Dead without Jerry. What do you think?

I'm a long time Head, seen hundreds of shows. I've been in this dilemna about 5 years ago. I was torn, to see the Dead and NOT do Jerry songs would be awful but to see the Dead and have someone else do Jerry songs would kill me. So I didn't go.
Less than a month ago I saw Phil Lesh, Bobby and some other dude on some show, my husband recorded it, not realizing just how much I miss Jerry. This is the first time I've seen them since Jerry died. I was crying, Bobby and this dude were singing Friend of the Devil and it just tore my heart out.
I prefer Jerry songs so it just doesn't do me any good to see someone else do his songs. I've got plenty of old soundboard tapes and live CDs. It's good enough for me and I can still feel Jerry.
Jerry lives in my heart.

Thank you for your reply! It is a tough dilemma, so we decided not to go either. I just hope I won't regret it later. On an unrelated topic, that is a beautiful husky you have!

Yes, that's my Alaskan Malamute, Juneau.
Back to Jerry, I hope you don't regret it either. For me, I know I'd regret going. It's just too hard to see what I've lost with the absence of Jerry. I prefer to keep the awesome memories of shows I have intact. I'm afraid they'd be tainted with negative feelings, if I did go. Besdies, I know I'd cry through every Jerry song, where's the fun in that?

Yes, I can certainly understand your sentiment. Sometimes it's best to let fond memories be just that - memories to cherish, not to taint with an unfulfulling or unpleasant experience. A few of my friends are at the concert today, so I will be interested in hearing about the experience later. I'm happy with my decision to stay home and hear about it second-hand. RIP Jerry, we love you!

It'd just be a band without a fat old guy in it.
I guess it'd be the same as seeing the Beatles without Lennon and Harrison, or the Who without Moon and Entwistle, or Queen without Freddie Mercury. They might be Queen or the Beatles, or the Who, or Zeppeling or the Dead, but without the whole band, they're not.
