Brain injury is an injury to the brain that occurs after birth and which is not hereditary, congenital or degenerative. Often used by the public to refer to a brief loss of consciousness.* Anoxic Brain Injury: An injury that results from lack ofoxygen to the brain. This most often from a lack of blood flow due to inury or bleeding.* Traumatic Brain Inury (TBI): An acquired injury to the brain caused by an external physical force, restulting in total or partial functional disability or psyshosocial impairment, or both, that adversely affects a child's educational performance. The term applies to open or closed head injuries resulting in impairments in one or more areas, such as congnition, language, momory, attention, reasoning, abstract thinking, judgment, problem-solving, sensory, perceptual and motor abilities, psychosocial behavior, physical functions, information processing, and speech.
