| | The absolute worst thing you can do is to let your mower (or any other equipment such as weed eaters, leaf blowers, or even cars, trucks, or boat motors) sit up all winter without any attention. In response to your questions, disconnecting the battery will not help the situation. Also, you certainly don't need to buy a new battery every year. The solution is simple. All you have to do is to start your mower up a couple of times per month, let it run for a few minutes, then just shut it down. If you can drive it around a little while it is running, that will be the best thing to do. It doesn't have to run for long. About 5-10 minutes should be enough. Just make sure to check the oil in it before starting it up. Running the engine for a few minutes a couple of times per month will keep the battery charged up. Also, you may want to try to charge or jump-start the battery you have rather than going out and buying another one immediately. I had the same problem with my mower at the start of this season. I had neglected to start it up for a few months, and the battery had gone dead. I used my jumper cables and just jumped the battery mower off with my truck, just as if I were jumping off another car or truck. I jumped off my mower, then mowed my yard. The battery was recharged while I was mowing, and I have not had any more trouble starting my mower. If you or your husband is knowledgeable about using jumper cables or a battery charger, this may be the quickest way to fix your problem. There is likely nothing wrong with the battery you have. It just may need to be charged, so don't rush right out and buy another battery. In the future, just remember to start the mower and run it for a few minutes a couple of times per month. This will keep your battery in working order. It will also help keep the seals and stuff in your motor properly lubricated, and will help keep your fuel system clear. This will all help to extend the life of your engine, and your battery as well. | | | | | | | moonlitmagikchild (8089)

| | well i got one of those machines that jump batteries and it would help it start but it would never get the battery to charge again once it died.. so thats how we have been doing things.. jumping it with the machine to get it to work.. mow the lawn then stop and repeat when the next time happened.. thanks for the tips.. i will remember to do that.. it sucks because i bought it and then once i got home realized the shed (which is well established on a foundation and etc) doorway was too narrow to get it in.. i wanted to cry! | | | | goldeneagle (5503)

| | it sounds like your battery may have a dead cell in it. The best thing to do is replace it. However, some of those batteries have little lid on the top of them. If you pry those lids off with a screwdriver, there are holes underneath. If this is the case, you should be able to see water near the top of each hole. If not, simply pour some water into them, them put the lids back on. Just be careful not to let the water flow out of the top. This may be the reason for your battery not holding the charge. Most car batteries have these lids on them that will allow you to add water to the battery cells, but I don't know if they are doing the same thing these days with lawn mower batteries. Depending on your level of mechanical knowledge, you may want to look at your old battery to see if it may need some water in it, or if it is made so that water can be added. Otherwise, just get a new one, then remember to run your mower engine for a few minutes a couple of times per month, whether you are actually using it to cut the grass or not... | | | | moonlitmagikchild (8089)

| | yes. For some reason just removing it from the mower is good enough. | | | | | | | Great Lawn Tractor -57% Compare prices now and pay up to 57% less on quality Lawn Tractor! www.Lawn-Tractor.news72.com | add comment | | | |
