how to host?

i don't know how host a web site.even though i created a site myself ,i did't know ho to host it. i didn't understand the procedures from uploading of sites? i heard of free web hosting? what does it mean? i have gone through many sites and books but i was not clear of web hosting process.please somebody help me...
