| | | | | | 1. amirev777 (802) | 8 months ago | hi yeah u r right-hinduism is one of the misunderstood religions in the world-it is the most ancient and the most practicable-it certainly does teach non-violence, but is also not averse to taking up arms when one's interests are threatened.it believes in 'live and let live' principle and does not exhort its believers to kill non-believers or convert them to Hinduism by hook-or-crook.here is an article that i read on the internet:
Canadians view Hinduism positively, not Islam, Sikhism Toronto, April 24 (IANS) Hinduism is the most positively viewed religion after Christianity in Canada, where many believe that Islam promotes violence and so does Sikhism, says a survey by a premier magazine.
According to the survey by Maclean's weekly, almost half of Canadians believe that Islam promotes violence. More than a quarter of them also view Sikhism as encouraging violence. On the other hand, Hinduism was viewed most positively after Christianity, according to the survey. When the respondents were asked whether they thought that 'the mainstream beliefs' of the major religions 'encourage violence or are mostly peaceful', only 10 percent said Christianity taught violence. On the other hand, 45 percent said Islam stood for violence and hatred. Nearly 26 percent viewed Sikhism as promoting violence. While 70 percent said they hold a positive view of Christianity, 41 percent said they viewed Hinduism positively. Showing how deep anti-Semitism is still in this liberal country, 44 percent respondents said they would not want their children to marry a person of Jewish faith. Even fewer said they would be comfortable with their children marrying a Sikh or a Muslim. Worse still, 62 percent Canadians said they opposed changes to laws to accommodate new ethnic immigrant groups and minorities. In the French-dominant province of Quebec, this figure rose to 74 percent. As part of the survey, 1,002 Canadians from all walks of life were selected randomly to elicit their views on various religions. The magazine said Canadians like to think of their country as a model of multi-ethnic and multicultural harmony, but when it comes to the major faiths other than Christianity they harbour shocking biases. Requesting anonymity, a Toronto-based Sikh leader said: 'The survey shows that the Air India bombing of 1985 and the ongoing violence among the Indo-Canadian Punjabi youth in British Columbia have created stereotypes about the Sikhs.' Among the more than a million South Asians in Canada, Sikhs and Hindus are the two biggest groups.

GADHISUNU (1117) | 4 months ago | Amirev, more than non-violence Hiduism teaches live and let live. You are right again when you said Hindus do not mind taking up arms if their existence is threatened. But it is mistakenly believed that non-violence is enshrined in the mainstream canons of Hinduism. If such an impression has gained currency it is mainly because of the influence of Jainism, and Buddhism to some extent. Otherwise non-violence in HInduism is recommended for the ascetics or those who are on the path to God-realization as we call it. Like, you find 'Ahimsa'(= non-violence) mentioned in the Yoga sutras of Patanjali. The Vedic Ahimsa is more a practical doctrine.
It must have been Mahatma Gandhi who popularized the concept of non-violence again because of the Jain influence on him. He read non-violence into the Bhagavad-Gita and made it the main plank of his struggle for independence.Of course there is no gainsaying the fact that Ahimsa can be practised in a very enlightened society of the future where disputes are more likely to be settled by dialog or open discussion. To be talking Ahimsa to a terrorist who is simply not interested in listening to and gunning down people mercilessly, "practicing" Non-violence is an invitation to a novel population control measure at its best.Till such a time perhaps Hindus not shying to fight as suggested in he main message of the Gita is a must.
To think Sikhs are a violent community, just because a few misguided fellows hijacked a plane and blasted it, is not being fair to them. They definitely are a little more hot-headed than the docile Hindus, but they have historical reasons to be what they are.
