does savings bonds still work the way they use to?

i was woundering if savings bonds are a good thing to invest in for a childs savings?i guess i dont know much about them. i just know when we all were younger they seemed to be the thing every one was geting for thier childrens future.do they still hold the same value.and what is the least and most amount you can invest in?
