Donating To An Organization or Straight to One in Need? email this discussion to a friend?

indestructiblemb (4)8 months ago

Would you rather give to a large organization in hopes it will reach someone in need or if you had something you didn't need and knew of someone who could use it which would you do?

I have noticed a disconnect with organizations these days when it comes to getting something and then giving it to someone who needs it.

Take for example if you had some baby items you did not need like a crib or other baby items that were all in good condition and well within the date range to still be used. Lets say a friend from down the street told you of a young soon to be mother who did not have a lot of needed items. would you give your stuff to the young mother either directly or through someone they trusted? Or would you rather just give your things to an organization that could pass the stuff on to her?

Most places that assist with getting things for people in need mainly ask for money and tend to not donate things like a used car seat or a crib, there always seems to be doubt that you broke it somehow and it just wouldn't be safe. It could be brand new just out of the package and they would still turn it away.

Why would you buy a homeless man food so he wouldn't buy booze with any money you gave him,but then give money to the organization if you weren't sure if that new mother down the street would get that good crib you don't need anymore? That would be silly.

Why can you donate clothes or money but you can't donate a crib, car seat, bassinet, or stroller that are still in good condition? Most cribs have a made on date so there are no worries about when it was made, and if you get in an accident and your child's car seat was damaged I am sure you would not be cheap enough to not buy a new one. A stroller is easy enough to look over for structural damage, as is a bassinet.

I truly believe that if you see someone in need of something and you don't need yours then you should find a way to give it to them. They don't need the money to buy it, if you don't need yours and its in good condition and its in it's prime date range to be used don't waste your money, pass your item on.

i donate to a local charity that runs a shelter for homeless people. the stuff that i give them all goes to needy people, nothing gets sold. i used to give to goodwill but decided i would rather support a local charity.

I feel weird donating to a place like goodwill that sells donated items, I think the only thing I gave to a place that sells donations was clothing since I my kids all went through a growth spurt at once and I couldn't find someone who needed all those boy and girl clothes.

I am glad that you could find a place to donate items and they would use them instead of a place that just asked for money, I believe that when its items donated you feel more of a connection when giving. Plus with the economy going it can make it harder to give money.

I like to give to organizations that actually use the stuff too. I gave away a bunch of work clothes that didn't fit me to a local group that takes work clothes in good condition and gives them to women who need clothes for job interviews. Which is definitely something I am in support of.

There are many ways of donating as you said and probably I use them all at one time or another. I recycle many things among my family and friends. The baby things are passed from one baby to another until they dissolve in shreadslol. Same with cribs, car seats for children, etc. After they have fulfilled their duty inside the inner circle, we see if there“s something worth giving away. I give some clothes to institutions that take care of needy people. As for money, the little I can spare I give to my special charity: I donate for children with cancer as une of my grandsons died of cancer.

A lot of places used to allow you to donate used toys for Christmas too. And now most places require new toys.

I can see why they do that though really. I'm sure a bunch of people ruined it for the rest of us. They probably donated stuff that was in horrible condition, rather than being smart about what to give away.

So I still give away my used stuff, but I give it directly to people on FreeCycle. I've had people take toys that I had, which are mostly practically brand new, and tell me that they gave them to their child for a birthday or other occasion because they simply couldn't afford a present. And they were so happy because their child didn't know the difference on used and new. And that is how I grew up too, to me, if it was new to me then it was new.

But I can definitely understand that an organization can't trust people to give them good used stuff. Maybe that car seat had been in an accident, how do they know? Their reputation is at stake if they give it away. But if you give it away personally, they aren't the ones at fault if anything goes wrong.

On the plus side though, once I saw a group asking for money to give food to homeless people. And then right across the street was a homeless man. I asked them what was up with that, because it seemed a bit odd. They said he didn't want to go to their shelter, but they did give him a packet of food. So I was glad to see that at least. But generally, I will give food to the homeless on my own as well. Especially if I am leaving a restaurant with leftovers or something, if I have food the homeless are always welcome to it. If they ask me for food and I have nothing on me though usually I won't give them money, just in case I was enabling a drug addiction.
