Natural Grey Sea Salt -v- Refined Salt  email this discussion to a friend?

We hear so much today about how salt is bad for you. Salt free diets are best; salt exacerbates high blood pressure and strokes; etc. etc.

So, if salt is not required by the body, how come, when all else fails, in an emergency, you receive a saline drip? If it really is that bad for you, what possible use could this dangerous substance do for you, when your life is already threatened?The answers are simple - the natural makeup of our bodily fluids closely resembles that of sea salt. We require the unadulterated sodium and other trace elements found in natural grey sea salt to survive - without salt, we will die! This is an absolute fact.

Then why are we told not to use salt? The problems lie in the intake of refined salt (commonly known as table salt) - the sort you can buy in little packets, tubes, jars etc. from the supermarket, which is brilliantly white, free-flowing, never clogs the salt cellar etc. What a wonderful invention! However, this refined salt will have been:-

Mechanically harvested, often taken from concrete storage basins and transferred through metal pipe-work to reach its destination;
Undergone substantial artificial processes which serves only to degrade the product still further;
Had its molecular structure cracked by being heated to extremely high temperatures, over and above the level of the heat of the sun;
Through all of these procedures, it will have been totally divested of the essential elements required by our bodies to survive;
And finally, it will have been further chemically altered by the addition of anti-clogging agents, bleach and iodine.

Natural grey sea salt, however, does not undergo any of these harmful processes. it is:-

Harvested by hand, using the traditional methods followed by early salt harvesters 2000 years ago;
Pure, and does not undergo any chemically altering processes;
Wet, and grey in colour - the grey indicates the mineral and trace elements content, essential to our survival;
Formed in small, very precise cubic crystals;
Rich in the 24 elements which have been proven to be biologically necessary to maintain life (Scientific American Magazine 1976: "The Chemical Elements of Life" by Earl Friden.

I think the information you have given is very misleading.

The problem with salt isnt that it is toxic to our bodies. We do in fact need sodium in order to survive. The problem is that people get far too much sodium in their diets! The excess sodium causes water retention because the body tries to balance the sodium content across membranes. The only way to do that is to move water, because the electrolytes are blocked. The water retention can affect blood pressure.

The reason you are given a saline drip in an emergency is because all fluid that we intake must have electrolytes in it. It is possible to get pure water, through distillation and deionization. However, that water is deadly to a person if consumed! The saline drip is given in an emergency when a person is dehydrated or has lost a lot of fluids. It isnt for the sodium itself.

The sea salt is no better or worse for our bodies than the table salt you can buy in the store when talking about sodium. The table salt will contain only sodium and chloride. The sea salt will contain other elements as well. However, the sodium in either of those sources is identical! If it weren't, it would no longer be sodium.

Therefore, if sodium is a concern in a person's diet, as it is for many people, the sodium simply needs to be reduced. Changing the source of sodium wont give the results necessary to improve health because the excessive amounts of sodium will still be in a person's body.

The sodium contained in refined table salt has been chemically cleansed, purified, and then bleached, with iodine added. it is this process which causes a problem for our blies when we consume refined salt. The amount of sodium contained in Refined salt is extremely high, by virtue of the fact that all the other elements have been removed, so the body is dosed with a higher concentrate than it would be if natural grey sea salt were consumed. Therefore, because it undergoes no chemical process, the amount of sodium contained in natural grey sea salt is much lower than in refined salt, and since it is a completely natural substance, it is much better utilised by the human body. The added benefits of using natural grey sea salt lie in the naturally occurring essential elements and trace minerals contained therein, which all act together in providing the human body with its daily requirements. All of these essential elements and trace minerals are removed by the chemical processes and extremely high temperatures (1200 degrees F) to which refined salt is heated.

For further information of the dangers of refined salt, I suggest that you consult Crusader Health News, January 18, 2009 - Interview of Dr. David Brownstein, Salt Institute, www.saltinstitute.org - for the view of a top professional on the subject.
