I usually try to sleep between 7 to 9 hours a night. I prefer not to get less than 6 hours a sleep, because if I get less than 6 hours of sleep a night, I find that I don't function properly. I prefer not to sleep just 6 hours, but sometimes I don't really have much choice but to sleep 6 hours.

I really dont get a lot of sleep. Sometimes I sleep for 8-9 hours but thats only once in a week. All other days I sleep for 6-7 hours only. I has really caused a lot of health problems to me but I cant help it. There is so much work preasure that sleeping becomes a problem sometimes.

Most people in our society today tend to get a lot less sleep than they need. The 8 hours that you mention is usually taken as an upper limit, but it really should be the minimal amount that people should get. As you say, there are people that do get far less than 8 hours, and some only 3 or 4 hours. At first it looks like these people are different, and require less sleep than the average person, but that is rarely the case. It's just that these people don't show the sign of sleep deprivation right away. They are however, accumulation a "sleep debt". The "sleep debt" has been well studied. Even if a person seems to function well on little sleep, there are physical and mental effects that may not show themselves right away, but do accumulate. At some point, the debt gets too high, and the person gets ill, either physically, mentally, or both. The good news is that , like a financial debt, "sleep debt" can be paid off. If you realize that you have been sleeping for far too little for a long period of time, you can start sleeping extra, to pay off the "debt". However, if you wait until you get sick, then you may not be able to undo all the damage. Remember, some people need more than 8 hours. A friend of mine needs at least 9 or 10 a day, or she doesn't function well. The other thing is that sleep does not have to occur all at once. Like eating, it can be done in smaller amounts at a time. Instead of 8 to 10 hours a night, it's fine to get only 6 or 7 a night, and then nap 1 or 2 hours in the afternoon. That's a good time to nap, since most people's biological clock gives them low energy around that time.

I usually need around 7 - 8 hours sleep in 24 hours. But, since my toddler now very naughty and sleep very late, i am only able to sleep around 5 - 6 hours in 24 hours. Sometimes, i do take a nap in the afternoon for 1/2 or an hour to compensate the missing hours of sleep when my toddler is sleeping. Yes, lack of sleeping is not healthy to our body. That's why, we must always have enough sleep to let our body and mind to have enough rest, too..

Usually I have 5/6 hour sleep in 24 hour. But I think it should be increase for good health. Because, when I sleep more than 8 hours a day, the rest of the time is very tired less, and I feel comfort hole of the day. But, when our body can't fulfill proper sleep, it becomes tired and we feel discomfort. After a short sleep when I go to office, my mind want to rest more....
